Reply to Chris,

The laptop is a Phillips Freevents X67. The battery charges and the laptop can be used in windows normal mode and it works fine from the battery. If we try to use it from the mains it runs for a couple of minutes and then just switches off. It will work okay in safe made and doesn't switch off when being used from the mains. It is my daughters laptop she has left it with me whilst she's away at uni. As you've probably guessed I am a PC dummy when it comes to the technical side. Mo

No experience of Philips laptops. However, I would guess that it could well be over heating, as in Safe Mode a lot of drivers are turned off so the processor isn't doing a lot, and the video card isn't being pushed as it is running at a crappy screen resolution.

My best guess then would be over heating (most likely) as it shuts down and I'm sure Intel processors are designed to do that, or the video card has a problem. May not be worth the cost of repair, especially if it needs a new board. However, if it's under warranty then obviously get it returned.

Would you feel confident opening up the case or at least removing the keyboard? Maybe try blasting some canned air inside to see if ti removes any dust, and spray it into the fans on the sides/underneath of the laptop.

Thanks to everyone who replied to this problem my daughter has purchased a new laptop and has given me the faulty one when she gets back from uni I will ask her to take the top off and clean it. I think it is overheating because it gets really hot.

Thanks to everyone who took time out to reply Mo :-) :-)
