apart from mist coating i normally only thin if im going onto good smooth walls .a medium pile roller and it flows out nice and flat.i used to work for a fellow whos catchphrase was "get plenty of paint on that" he used long pile rollers on everything, even on the smoothest of walls. they ended up wasted with orange peel

The key to using long pile or sheepskin rollers is to back roll! That action lays off the paint so yoou can avoid any stippleing or orange peel effect.
Thats if your using 15" sleeves, which dont come in short pile, A must if you've any decent area to cover!

Not a joke ... someone on here, I can't remember who, said you shouldn't use vinyl matt for mist-coating. I can't remember the reason they gave.

Sorry mate...Mis coating is done with NON-VINYL paint because the vinyl will stop any remainding moisture from escaping and trap it between the plaster and the paint causing it to peel away.
For the same reason vinyl paint is prodominantly used in high moisture areas, such as kitchens and bathrooms, to stop it happening the other way.
