the original boxing actually continues down below as can be seen in the attached image - would you be tempted to bite the bullet and rebox the lot in or continue as I initially thought of. Thanks for the advice on brackets and lagging - I wondered how I was going to stop the pipes moving when the water is turned on and off. Im glad I asked on here tonight instead of going straight to BQ tomorrow and asking there.

If you can get it looking good then making good as per you original plan would be the cheapest, it shouldn't be too bad to fix a 2 x 2 timber on the wall to match the existing, just pack any low spots.

you mean pack the low spots behind the wood I screw to the wall or pack the back of the tiles with adhesive when I come to adding the tiles? You see if I screw from top to bottom as it is the wall isnt level so obviously the tiles wont be will they.
thanks again for all your help tonight BTW

You need to get the wood frame right, then the rest should fall into place.
So pack the low spot where you fix.
If you going into B&poo you can buy a bag of plastic packers.

ahh so thats what they are for - am I right in thinking you just add these behind the wood to push it forward until you get the frame level/straight up as you require it - now I think I just heard the penny drop.

That's correct, they are tapered, so if you put one in from each side they close up to the right thickness.

You should be able to find them easy enough. there may be a bag with mixed thickness or different coloured ones, get something in the middle range, you can add as many as you like, provided the screws are long enough. I would go for about a 75 mm screw, then let them into the wood a bit if necessary.
