Off topic slightly, but how safe if online stores such as Dropbox and Google Docs.

Do they back up so you data is always safe.

I'd say with a named service, it's safe.

Your data is typically mirrored in some fashion across multiple data centers in the world/countries. One of the biggest problems with online data storage is retrieval, should you need to get it back quickly - you are limited by your connection speed. Often, the inital backup is also rather slow.

In my previous job, I worked with an online data storage company to develop a service package. Made many changes to the look and feel, in fact I gave a load of feedback the other day for improvements. I must say, I was very impressed by their integrity and the value they put on the customer data they keep.

This is a paid service though - the free ones I have never personally used for anything more than a simple transfer.

(I actually still have a totally unlimited account - it's remained active after I left, as I still use it and pass ideas/info back to the current team).
