Depends what you are like at spreading adhesive, how much lippage there is to the tiles and how deep the ridges are. Might be safer to back butter.
I would most certainly lift a tile now and again to check coverage if you are not back buttering.
The lippage will be seen when placing two tiles face to face and holding them up to the light. Look along the 600mm edges and you will see daylight between them. A little on good tiles and enough to get cheese and ham between on cack tiles.
