Re: HP Photosmart C8180
Have a read of this (I know it's a different device but probably uses the same software)
http://forum.kaspersky.com/lofiversion/ ... 08615.html
As in the link, have you tried shutting down Kapersky to exclude this from the equation (it says Right Click the K in the task bar and click Exit)?
As far as I recall, pressing the Scan button on the device invokes the HP Imaging software, so try using the Windows scan function if you haven't already.

Re: HP Photosmart C8180
Hi Steve
Thanks for those tips.
Sadly exiting Kaspersky made no difference and neither did trying to scan from windows. I still get the same error messages as with the HP software.
However, I went out and bought another all in one today. I got a cheap as chips HP 5510e. Only £49 and I can obviously claim the VAT back as well.
Happy days

Re: HP Photosmart C8180
Dave,
sorry we couldn't fix it, if you were around this way I'd be intrigued to have a play with it to see what the problem was.
TheScruff,
as Dave had a HP before I guess the ink costs won't be too much of a shock - as it is I see that you can buy a set of four original standard capacity cartridges (1 black, 3 colour) for around £22 which is cheap for HP.

Re: HP Photosmart C8180
I would have liked to have been able to reload the firmware onto the 8180, but still have not been able to find it as a download anywhere
I still feel that it is this that is making the thing send out the message that something else is using it.
I'm keeping the C8180 as a printer only, as it is still far superior than the cheap one I have just bought.
The new one is good enough for me as a scanner as I only scan my invoices to email to customers.

Re: HP Photosmart C8180
There doesn't seem to be much in the way of firmware available to download from the HP site, even stuff that seemingly was there previously.
Have you tried the various Reset procedures on the net?
1) Dirty Reset
Pull the power lead out from the back of the printer and then turn off at the wall socket.
Wait 30 seconds.
Reconnect and power back on.
2) Reset NVRAM
HP C8180 NVM Reset :
1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the HP All-in-One.
2. Wait 60 seconds.
3. Press and hold Print Photos & Photo Fix buttons simultaneously on the control panel; keep them pressed and reconnect the power cord to the All-in-One.
4. Continue pressing the buttons until the display goes blank or Reset shows on the control panel display.
I can't verify either solution myself but expect that the second option will lose page counts, service mode settings, network configuration and reset to factory defaults. So don't blame me.
Lastly you could try downloading and running the latest HP Diagnostic Tool from here:

Would have thought this would be a good place to start.

Steve
I've now done all in your last post, but still the same error message stating another device is using the scanner and it's busy.
Thanks for all your help, but I will have to admit defeat now
John, been there loads of times but only the drivers are available, no firmware.

Re: HP Photosmart C8180
Dave a silly idea.
Right click on the task bar and open task manager.
If the scanner is in the list highlite it and click end task.
