Long time since I used Diesel, but sounds like knackered glowplugs to me. Can't always go by the coil light going off

a mate of mine has a new car every couple of years, they are always in and out of the dealers getting something fixed. ok he doesn't have to pay as it is under warranty, but he is already paying with the massive depreciation of buying new.
87k high miles, stop talking shite timm

Could be a problem with the glow plug curcuit as Hoovie mentioned because i think the glow plugs still operate after start up until the engine reaches temperature

oh and check the wire on the stop valve on the pump is a good connection & the fast idle kicker/ cold idle on the pump functions.

Please keep in mind that i have never worked on a diesel
the cold idle on the pump doesnt kick in. I turned it over this morning and you can manually move the cam, and engine tone goes up a bit, but it didnt do this on its own from cold. Now, how do you fix it?
also looked at the air filter and all pipes leading to it, and the pipe that comes out the cover where the plugs are has oil in it. this oil is going along this pipe and into the air filter, only a small mount. In line with this pipe is a plastic molded bit that has a spring in it. Dont have a clue what this bit does.
The plugs/glow plugs have 2 wires and a pipe coming out them. Anything special to do if i was to remove them to inspect?

Idle kicker-is it operated by a thermostatic cable? you have to be very carfull with this ,get it wrong & its black smoke time
if it starts on all four then the plugs are ok for the time being, did you check all the fuel connections?

yes, theres a cable coming out it going into 'something'. Could it have not been cold enough this morning? It was about 6 degrees.
It runs smoothly with power, so I presume its firing fine on all plugs.
Havent checked fuel connections yet. I presume i just nip each connection and check for leaks?
Any thoughts on the oil in air lines?

normal engine breathing as long as its just mist oil deposits & not 1/2 the sump

Handy, as Steve said, its called a crankcase breather, excess pressure in the crankcase is put straight into the intake filter with the intention of being burnt off, its not ecofriendly but you remove from the air filter and stick it in a bottle of oil etc

i thought diesels only used the glowplugs to get them warm to start with
they dont fire, its all compression
