You mean adding another length of moulding to the top, similar in style to the one across the top of the cupboard? To make the top heavier and more chunky?

its personal taste
assuming your timber is say 15-21mm aim to add say 40-44mm molding to the the top front about 6mm up from the bottom off the top so you have a 6mm step similar to a door frame on the top part

usually if i build a unit what ever is at the plinth at the bottom like a swirly/wavy design will be replicated under the top
the top will tend to be higher up allow the detail to give a similar or proportionate spacing to other shelves

Great work!!

I'm looking to build some cupboards and shelves in the alcoves either side of a fireplace and would love for them to look s good as these when done!!!

I'm really interested in the way you've fixed the shelvs at either end as I don't want any fixings showing and wasn't sure how to achieve that. Am I right in thinking you've screwed shelf supports to the wall, then attached the shelves on top of the supports then boarded in the whole section between shelves to hide everything?

That looks great Plenty of storage room on there, Its very well made i could do with some more storage myself, :thumbleft:
