I use a rubber car mat which works well.

router mats are fantastic anything smaller than about 2x6" its a bit fiddly but will still be ok
the points is you supply the clamping force as you push down on the router
have never had a a bit off wood move yet
as long as the mat is not floating on dust your fine

One can but that anti slip mesh stuff in pound shops sometimes.
Back to Aldi, the Trowbridge store still has heaps of routers now at £16.99
