Even though you need a new dimmer switch this wouldn't cause it as only the light the dimmer controls wouldn't work.

No fuses blown, no loose connections and no junction boxes.

Haven't had any problems with mice by any chance?

Your wife turned on the light, there were sparks and the lights went out. This tells me that the fault is at the fan light!

Only other thing it could be is that the lights are fed from the plugs off a switched fused spur and this is the fuse that has blown. But this is highly unlikely! :?

Cheers again
If I get home from work before it gets dark tomorrow, I will check the fuse box and fan light.

It is easier typing in the dark than fixing lights in the dark.

Ok heres an update

I have checked the fuse box for loose connections all ok. When I turned the power back on the lights were working,
After turning the lights on and off a few times I got a shock from one of the switches, which was then replaced and the lights tried again. They worked ok a few times but then started flickering. :? :?
I decided to change all the light switches thinking more than 1 was faulty. again the power was turned back on. the lights were turned on and off again, the lights flickered again and went off, Now i`m back to square one and have nothing. :?

Is it possible the cable is shorting out some where in the circuit :?:

I would call a spark, I think you will have a simple problem somewhere that could take us days to find over the internet and spark a few mins
