Is my laptop F@cked??

Post by blackvenom »

I could be wrong but I don't think the bootable live OS DVD's/USB's like ubuntu write any info to the hard drive so in theory it should still boot into the Live OS even if the hard drive has failed

When you turn on your laptop, do you get any error codes?

Have you set the bios to boot from cd only?

As if you can't boot into that you will not be able to load anything on.

If you do, a linux bootable will only load into memory and will disappear when you shutdown. Then that will give you good indication if its hard drive or not.

Yes set to boot from CD, screen shows "loading files" (CD/DVD drive whirrs away normally)...then just the white arrow against a black screen.

We'll clearly something is causing the laptop to hang hang when booting from a CD. At this time as the Live DVD/CD doesn't write to the hard drive but loads into memory we can forget about the hard drive for now. I would next download CD called Hirens Boot Disk and run a memory test to make sure your RAM isn't goosed

 How long do I need to keep running it??

At the mo run time 1hr 42min.. loadsa info about the chipset etc,

What I assume is the results bar shows:-

Cached RsvdMem Memmap Cache ECC Test Pass Errors ECC Errs
2936M ... 236K ... . e820 .. on .. off .. Std ... 2 . .. 0

And the bottom of screen reads *****Pass complete, no errors, press Esc to exit***

But it's continuing to test..

It sounds like it's more entertaining than telly - but it'll still all end in the last few minutes - as my M-in-law used to say (when she still had half a brain) -- ooooh the suspense! :-)
One day it will all be firewood.
