There's no way that adding disks or expansion cards will invalidate warranty, you'd only lose warranty if you installed a faulty device that caused damage.

So far so good.
It even comes with "shell" the programme that makes windows 8 look like windows xp
Its now downloading all of its updates.

You should be able to install your old HDD in your new computer, once there is an operating system in place. Install it as an ADDITIONAL slave drive using the jumpers at the back, with the ribbon cable or SATA cable from the old machine. Then when you switch on it SHOULD just appear as an additional drive, and you can simply click and drag the files from and to where you want them. You may have to disable the new drive in the bios options so the computer only boots from the new HDD. I have done this a few times and it works well. As some earlier posters said, you are bound to miss something, and if you hold onto the old drive then you can always find it.

If you don't fancy that you could try software such as NORTON GHOST, which will allow you to make an exact copy of your old HDD on your new one.

I have a gadject that has a USB to IDE/SATA connection for interrogating disk drives. One simply connects up the provided PSU(or use the one in the machine if there is a spare plug) and EVENTUALLY any HDD or optical drive plugged into the gadget will appear in "my computer".

I would like to try wine~O's idea, but it seems of all the cables I do have I don't have a usb to usb.

I have also watched how to transfer files on youtube using windows transfer, (now I know what its called) They don't mention usb cable One did say about using an external hard drive. (I found an old device that will / should work)
Did as wine~O said, (almost same as on YT) nope Their window always has 3 options, yes, no, external hard drive. My window only has yes or no options (on both old and new pc's, both have win 8.1)

Still, I have a kettle, lots of coffee and lots of time............. and a memory stick

I'm bit loathe to suggest this because of the privacy/tracking issues, but if your connection speed is OK and there is nothing you're sensitive about you could consider a cloud service to upload your files from the old PC and download them back to your new PC. Of course this means you could end up like Jennifer Lawrence and have all your nudie photos distributed on reddit and piratebay...

I am copying from an old HD, 8,000 files to copy, only another 5,000 to go, time for the kettle again.

Guess I will have to give up / go to bed.

I also wanted to copy the email and have all the folders it used to have. It was easy on win xp.

USB to USB cam be had for less that a £1 on amazon..

Using easy transfer when it asks select "hard drive" from the options list.. You should be able to specify C or D depending on where your files are ?

I will now go out and get a usb to usb cable. I honestly thought I had one when i brought the new tower.

I now have a usb to usb cable, plugged it in each pc, now connected to each other, open windows easy transfer, still no joy. I still only get two options. yes or no.
wine~O mentions options list, i don't have one.

The pictures below are of the only options I have.
If I click no, the programme closes.
If I click yes, it shows what drives there are available, but there are none.

Have you gone to the old PC and run easy transfer from there ? It allows you to select the files/folders you want to move..
