Do Microsoft support Vista still ? I only ask as support for Win7 ends next year (and support for WinXP ended this year)  (mind you, I suppose there's a load of old updates still out there on Win Update site)

Mainstream support ended for Vista in April 2012, but you should still be able to get the updates for it.

The extended support (tends to only be major security updates) should have gone on until April 2017, but not sure that it will do as they have now released two new versions of windows since and they always used to say it was 2 years after the 2nd successor was released. SO that would be 2 years after Windows 8 was released.

XP was the exception as it was still the major OS used around the world as not many companies/governments had actually bothered to (or could) upgrade to Vista or Win 7. So MS were sort of forced to extend it for a lot longer than they actually wanted to. If i remember correctly support was supposed to have originally ended back in about 2008.

Oh if only I wasn't so hungover from last night I might have something profound and amazing to say.

If it was me, I'd just chuck the drive in and move all the video files over to the bigger drive. You COULD clone the drive and it'll be fine, but seems like a lot of hassle for the reasons you are doing it.

As it's Vista, I'm sure it's not the best spec'd machine on the planet, so actually having a second drive will HELP with performance too when doing the video editing - albeit slightly (it means while editing video, which is quite memory intensive, that the drive isn't going back and forward between the video files and a 'swap file' which is basically memory that is on the hard drive.

Why did I go out on a school night...... :cb

PS.....if a machine has been supplied with Vista or is Vista Ready, then it basically means that it would run Windows 7 BETTER than Vista. If you ever get to the point where you want to eek the life and enjoyment out the machine, fill it up with memory (what's in it?) and stick 7 home premium on. Lovely.

If you ever decide to reformat then go for Windows 7 rather than re-installing Vista. Some would say go to the latest version (Win8) but the Win7 I suggest is based on personal preference rather than practicality.

:huray:

I use Windows 8.1 - does everything I need!

Don't have issues this re-installation malarky too - fully automated  (the joys of work).

Thanks Billy.

Yep, that sounds like the best option - just clear as many files from that main C: drive as possible, and on to the new larger slave.

Ain't going to bother going Win7 as Vista sadly does everything I need...

Thanks all :-)
