thanks everyone for your replies - really appreciate it. to address a few of the specific points..

the door is clearing the plinth with no trouble (it's quite a low one) but is butting up against the washer unit itself which has a white plastic panel hiding the motor etc.

I will try and refit with the washer at the top but i think this will mean even more of the wood panel is overhanging the bottom of the dishwasher door and therefore will butt up against the machine even sooner, i.e. before it's anywhere near flat. i've attached a couple more pictures of the bit the panel is hitting.

joinerjohn unfortunately I can't find the building-in instructions. I don't remember ever seeing them, which may be the root cause of my problems!!

I don't know if this will work, bit it sounds like it may be worth trying to drop the washer on its feet and add-in a fillet to fill the gap at the top. That way the decor panel could have be lifted and the overhang would be less at the bottom when the unit is opened. BTW IKEA units are non standard heights which may be where some of your issues are

If your dishwasher won't go any lower then:
a) trim the bottom of the door panel, or
b) fit the door as an independent cupboard door to the adjacent unit?

Just to add to the above, I found this illustration of an IKEA RENGÖRA integrated dishwasher. Note how the front door is fitted. IKEA appear to supply two doors or four doors as a full height set for their own integrated dishwashers: Note the pivot point, right near the bottom of the fronts - this must be the way to go (taken from print media - not available on line as far as I can ascertain): Looks like IKEA must supply a slider kit and some form of bracket or offset hinge kit for their dish washers

I think that you've hit the nail on the head, there, Eck. The OP quotes the dish washer as being an "Indesit DIF04B1", not an IKEA one and he seems to be showing a single-piece front panel in his first post, not the hinged set the IKEA ones require. Because IKEA kitchens normally have a lowish plinth height (circa 70mm) as opposed to the 150mm that most "standard" kitchens come with it looks like you either have to have a 4- or 2-piece front panel with an outward-hinging bottom section, IKEA style, or you may experience fouling. IKEA base cabiinets are 800mm high as opposed to the "norm" of 720mm and that photo I found seems to show a kitchen with virtually no plinth visible at all. Is that how IKEA kitchens are done these days? I wonder if the kit your link shows is available separately, or if it's one of those subtle ways that IKEA ties people into buying their integrateds?

So to sum up it looks like the OP needs to replace his single door with a 2-part or 4-part front and that he needs to install that kit using the mounting kit you refer to. Much easier when you can see some installation manuals! I have to admit I've not seen that system before - but then I haven't installed an IKEA kitchen in the last 2 years or so

It looks as though it will let the door slide up and down to permit the pivot to go right at the bottom.

The doors have been professionally sprayed so desperately trying to avoid buying new ones!!!

those units look like 735 mm high doors .. if this is the case then the dishwasher needs to be as low as possible and a panel fitted above the machine with a fill to worktop between panel and top .. the bottom of the door is hitting the actual machine as the door is longer than the usual 720 . some dishwashers have a recess allowed in the lower front panel to allow for the longer doors . a pro fitter would be aware of this . the plinth also needs to be scribed tidily into the floor as the gap looks terrible .
