The ITV program on wermwood scrubs interviewed loads of cons who said it was 500 quid a package the screws charged,and there was loads of them willing to take gear in.
Inmates openly smoking dope on camera that the screws turned a blind eye to. The list goes on.

I saw that, or something similar. Always going to be some sort of temptation. Can't see the "private jails" business helps much either.
Never really saw the point in locking dope fiends up anyway unless they are stealing or something.

That was actually Wandsworth (my old nick)

99% of drugs/mobile phones come in up the arse of inmates (plugging). As invasive searches aren't allowed this practise will continue. They also come in via visit's and the courts. Visitors smuggle them in plugged and either pass over with a kiss or in a drink.

In my 17 years as a prison officer I was never approached by an inmate asking me to bring stuff in. I only know of one prison officer who was caught bringing stuff in at HMP Frankland. One officer out of thousands isn't what I would call many.

As for the cons smoking weed on the landings sadly this is true. We used to have minimum staffing levels (MSL's)which was axed a few years ago. Our landing in Wandsworth used to have 32 staff. It now has 6. Due to the staffing levels officers are being assaulted on a regular basis and the con's are running riot. That's hardly the fault of the staff is it.

Don't believe everything you read in the papers or on the news.

In England alone 25 screws were caught,convicted and dismissed for bringing in drugs last year.
That's only in England and that's just the ones they have caught.

I was very careful! Only ever spent one night in and decided it wasn't for me. My comments do come from experience, not in jails but in other areas where I saw that reality unfortunately. Not that all are but enough are.

If they would steal a tape measure worth only a £1 or two then I'm sure they would steal your wallet, but that's a thief for you, rotten to the core, so please don't defend them by blaming the victim, a thief is a thief, big or small, expensive or cheap, they obviously need help, or a good stretch, at least in the porridge factory they can thieve off each other and probably risk a good hiding to boot, what a nice thought.

Tools cost money which eventually ups the price of the job so buy your own as the chances are your earning the same rate as me.

I'm not defending them, stealing is wrong, they are total scumbags who are a waste of oxygen, BUT, you have to take away their opportunity, that is your responsibility, it's your fault if you don't make things as difficult as you can for them.

Some of them are not working at all, I've known them move down a street going from job to job nicking what they can and selling it on at the next place - one lot came onto a job I was on and would ask what anyone wanted and then go to a builders merchants and nick it to order.

Sometimes they have no idea what they've even got, I was offered a disc-cutter once, I neither needed or wanted a disc-cutter, he insisted I at least take a look, I looked in his bag, it was a circular saw - the blade is round, it cuts, therefore it must be a disc-cutter.

Sorry Ayjay, I wasn't taking a pop at you in particular, but, as I said we can't always stand guard over our gear, we'd never get anything done, ie the loo, up a ladder etc, I of course see your point but we're supposed to be pro's and you know, I'm sure, the old adage "never nick another man's tools they are his living" but my rant is directed at other so called tradesmen lifting gear from co-workers and other trade persons, its bang out of order and if these toe rags were caught and penalised we'd all be happy bunnies, these days it seems you have to have eyes up your a**e in order to leave a job with the kit you started with, so, NO thief NO problem.

Nothing you can do about it. Certainly on smaller jobs you can rarely stop people wandering in and out in my experience. I've had tools taken "borrowed" by the householder when my back was turned. "Oh I saw that there and remembered a job I just had to do" If you said anything they'd go all sulky "It's only a tool"

Buy your own then!

Pointing out anything is a waste of time to people like that. They don't own tools, or at least tools that aren't rusty and useless, and they don't seem to understand about personal property either.

Craftsmen that nick or even borrow without asking aren't craftsmen IMO.

What can be done about it though I don't know.

Well I didn't know it was your 'trade' mate and went out of my way to explain in confidence to you in a PM and in a further PM in response to your doubt. So sod you then if you insist on trolling it in public, PMs are used to alleviate such bad manners and misunderstanding and it is bad form to bring it back into a thread - but you obviously are aggressively touchy on this point. Just forget it and don't expect further politeness.
