I think it's something to do with the key for Win10 to be initiated. When you upgrade, your legitimate Win7 key is used so Microsoft know you have a legit installation. once upgraded, your computer remembers that Win10 has been installed on that machine legitimately and allow the clean installation to continue. At least that's how I understand it.

My laptop is four years old lenovo thinkpad and wasn't top spec. by a long way. I can't remember the processors but it and an even clunkier Vista machine both checked out in the compatability test so I went ahead. One from Win7 and one from ahem a 'dodgier' route using old discs. Do back up, and test, and then back up again all your pics and mail and the like, remeber all your passwords and bookmarks and so on and what software you loaded over the years. I was surprised how much I used without thinking and couldn't remember the names of even, after cleaning the discs! It's a good time to remember the backups we never do anyway.

Check you favourite software will work and realsie any dodgy copies of Office etc you somehow got running will all disappear. Check on web for soundcard drivers, wifi card drivers etc. Win10 is clever but not perfect in that respect.

Took a day or so to download and go through all the button pushing to get it back to what I like and to reload some programmes or apps as they now call them and all my data BUT although some updates since took ages and a couple of restarts BOTH machines now fly along better than they ever did. I have got used to it after a while of cursing and like it a lot and would happily recommend it.

However, some nerdy friends hate Win10 nearly as much as Google for picking up your private data, location, usage trends etc. Microsoft have gone down that road with a vengeance. There are some fixes you can research but if your fetish collection is also 'dodgy' then expect to get ads for latex gloves and strange implements along with every webpage you load ...

Up to now, Win10 is absolutely free (unless you consider the cost of Win7 or Win8 in the first instance) one machine I had , had got a dodgy Win7 install on it and I used a program called WinLoader, which made it appear to be a legitimate Win7 installation. Gave that to one of my grandkids and he managed to upgrade to Win10

Mainly if you have issues. A clean install avoids the clutter of a badly managed system. I upgraded with only minor issues & find 10 fairly good but then I did have a less than 12 month old system. Like most versions of Windoze the key thing is finding where stuff has been moved to e.g. mru lists etc. I actually find Vista good. Only 1 BSOD in 7 years. None so far in 10 (watch for splinters).

My point was that it's pointless to waste time upgrading and then fresh install. Just save the time if that is your plan, backup, wipe and clean install.

But if you format the HDD and wipe all of the information off it, you effectively lose the licence key Windows installs when you upgrade, therefore you can download the Win10 ISO, but it won't install as there's no key. During a clean install, the installation software gets the key before wiping the HDD, or overwriting files.

Also incorrect Ian and debunked by Microsoft directly. It was media confusion.

"They" will get the update notification via Windows Update. "They" can update to 10, but "they" cannot activate their computers - ergo, still unlicensed, still pirated and limited in use.

If they gave it free, to everyone, could you imagine the uproar to those that purchase and pre-load genuine machines? They would sack it all off and let everyone just get the OS for free. The pre-loading, factory time, experience, staff, shipping, etc, etc isn't free - it's costly!! To give it free to all those who simply "get a copy off the net" would be an insult to genuine users worldwide.
