shhh dont put any ideas in thier heads. I thought that they were selections of test server tbh rather than an exchange of any kind, i dunnothescruff wrote:An interesting fact seems to be that Maidenhead is the sole server for the UK.
What would happen if it blew up by terrorists.
Is there a back-up.

Distances are your ISP to the checker, not yourself, I'm prob ~400 miles from maidenhead and closer to 500 to London in cable run terms. Being north of the Border and all.
Maidenhead
London (look at that ping though
)
Speedtests are dependant also on factors beyond your ISP, could be speedtest.net is busier in the evenings or VMs link to speedtest.net is busier. Though VM does have capacity issues.
I'm using UKonline ADSL2+ synched at
DownStream Connection Speed 13958 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 1018 kbps
so not too far off, maybe it is worth paying £24.99 a month for sharing space with only 20 rather than 50 to 150 others :)
tbh though if I watched TV I would just change over to sky and spend £10 a month more to get sat TV also, but I don't so I'll save the £10 per month.
Sadly Be* are meant to be enabling my exchange but have NO idea when. shame as Be* are cheaper and means no money going into a certain Australian pocket.
Also 21CN (21st Century Network) means that BT are changing over to an IP network (Internet Protocol) it does NOT mean fibre, which they are still dragging their heels over. It should mean simpler network maintenance and cheaper BB for some, but more expensive for others (different regional pricing, plus the govt wants to let them off the Universal Service Obligation hook, which means anyone north of Birmingham is gonna get caned with charges likely)
On fibre they are probably waiting for a taxpayer freebie no doubt. why they don't just contract H2O networks to lay fibre through the sewers at 10% of the cost of digging up roads eludes me...political posturing again.
They did offer to fibre the nation during the 80's post privatisation in exchange for being able to carry TV signals also. But vested interests with friends in Thatchers govt put paid to that idea so we are still stuck with worn out copper cables.

I find it totally obcsure that they are still using copper. AFAIK for years and years they had complete monopoly over the UK phone system so must have been raking it in hand over fist but obviously didn't give to much consideration to investment in new technology and the customer experience; now they've been left in the dark ages and they're holding us back there with them.
It's just sad that cable services are limited in many areas else I'd have been connected years ago. Everyone I know on cable has never looked back since switching.
