update
Drove today for about 1 hour and the temperature stayed at 90, the heater didn't work at all. I did put some radweld in it earlier as well.
The car is probably worth about £1500-1800.
The car does feel loud and shaky when i first start it, after that seems ok.

for the garage to check HG is not difficult.
also i reckon the airlock has just been introduced after water pump/thermo work.
get garage to take the air out of the system properly (sometimes they can be a pain)
get garage to check HG is okay...... but really how long did you drive it in the red? when you stopped was it steaming and looked ready to blow or didnt you check the engine bay?
if you've cooked it properly there is a strong chance the head is warped/cracked.
i'd get a new engine and drop that in; would be cheaper.... should b able to pick up a block for £250-300 plus £150 fitting.... swap your new bits over.
or scrap it and start again

I drove it yesterday and today.
Yesterday: Morning 40min drive, no heating but temp stayed at 90. Afternoon 1 hour drive, the heating worked but temp went up to 115 twice.
Today: Morning 40min drive, heating and temp ok. Afternoon 1 hour drive, heating ok but temp went up to 115 again.
I guess is time for another car then.

I looked at the fan when the temp was 110 and the fan was off for a bit then came on, then off again.
So the fan does come on when the temp is high but doesn't constantly stay on
The temp seems to go high after about 50-60min driving.
To go to work it only takes 40min and the temp is fine, but coming back takes longer(50-60min) because of the traffic so the temp goes up when i am nearly home.

okay before loosing hope on it get the cooling system bled properly following correct proceedure then report back....

This is how I do it...
Put heater on full hot setting (but low fan speed)
Start car and allow to get to operating temp (should be 80-90deg)
Squeeze various water hoses to push airlock out as it warms up
Refill expansion bottle or radiator with required mixture of water/coolant
Monitor over next day or two as it may drop further

correct procedure is dependant on car; above is the normal procedure but say on a bmw they have a bleed screw at the highest point of the cooling system (many cars have this); using the rad/expansion bottle cap wont work all the time if its not the highest part.
average time to bleed is about 10mins (guide)....
google the web and give it a shot yourself (i think you have 2 hoses at the back under a corrugated cover that you can use too albeit that might be on the FR?????) ; just make sure you put correct mix of coolant in.
also cannot remember but did they change the temp sensor?

The car was struggling to start this morning, i will take to the garage to do a block test to see if its the head gasket and will ask them about bleeding and temp sensor.
I will let you guys know how i get on

It was the head gasket after all. The car seems OK at the moment

He should have done a cylinder leak check to see if there was any hydrocarbons in the cooling system really.If your not getting hot air in your car that usually only a couple of things either a air lock or a headgasket. opperating temp is considered about 80 for the coolent and usually the fan cuts in at 96 (on the brand I work on).
people say the cars only worth £1500 and they cant warrent spending money on it but say you go out and buy a £3k car it could still be someone elses rubbish.but if you have you one repaired you have piece of mind that you know that car is a good one.

sounds like you got air blockage in the heater drain it down and flush it a few times as for the head been done for 300 notes that is a good price these days, and egg whites are cheaper than rad weld lol

I had the exact same problem as you!! My car was over heating intermittently for months, I had the radiator checked, the fan checked and then the mechanics started talking about head gaskets and other expensive sounding things.
One day I was stuck in traffic and although I kept turning the engine off, the traffic was creeping along and I couldn't stand for long without the cars behind beeping me to move a foot along!! Anyway, within about 20 minutes the car was overheating on a packed dual carriage way and I had no way of moving!!
Eventually I managed to turn off into a side road and opened the bonnet. It was the water pipe that goes from the radiator to the water tank (with pink water in). The pipe had perished and there are a small fracture in the shaft underneath, which you couldn't see from above, but pink water has sprayed out and was all over the metal casing thing, hence the steam everywhere!!
I bought a new pipe for £19.20 and some jubliee clips and got my brother to fix it, it hasn't happened since! It could be something simple like that!
