this brought a bit of excitement to a boring tuesday this week, the winch went on fire, someone was gouging next to it & the sparks went where they shouldn't

Cutting and gouging is orrible for sparks setting stuff on.

Touch wood, ive been lucky so far, only a few very minor fires.

Always worries me when i get the jobs at petrol stations

I'm flattered that you should take so much time and trouble on my account. :sunny:

You must be a very experienced DIYer, redoing a job six times and still failing to get it right. :B
I should be dead; I've cheated the Grim Reaper yet again by surviving my third heart attack in June.

Dont let any of these grumpy old buggers put you off having a shot especially if the only other option is buying a gate from wickes or b+q. However bad your welding may be it will probably hold better than that rubbish. Give it a shot. You may even enjoy it and you will certainly get some satisfaction from it when you get your gate in place. If you are close to me you can come and raid my scrap bin for bits of metal to practice on and I'll get you the steel at cost cut it for free and i'll send it for galvanising with my next batch so you can proove the profesionals wrong!!!
