When I connect my camera, or smartphone to my computer, I get the usual pop up. "Click to select what happens with this device." I just click it and the options come up (usually download new images from this device, or open device to explore files. I don't have to go to file explorer then select "This PC." It does everything almost automatically. Everything is working perfectly Col, and is very intuitive. At least that's my experience with this computer.

If it helps............I have a Fuji camera. I also used to have a dedicated programme for it, that I thought was the bees knees, did all sorts of things (so I thought) I lost the CD when i was on win XP so i had to get used to plugging in the camera and using "file explorer" to see what is on the memory card.
Now I have win 10 I have to take the camera memory card out and plug it into the card reader slot on the front of the pc, as the pc has trouble with the USB connection on the camera. It may seem long winded, but i find it quicker to take the card out than I do to plug in the camera.

No it isn't; it's a bag of worms!

The initial release installed ok on my desktop and on my laptop but the November update not so. It installed ok on my desktop but not on my laptop. I've been in contact with Microsoft but I honestly don't think they have a clue and, at times, that they are at all bothered by the fact that users worldwide can't install this update.

Steer clear!

The other 2 billion satisfied users are wrong eh? Technology is always like this. You may have an unusual hardware mix/drivers. Pay a technician to do it or join a specialist forum. That's what I do when I root a phone or build an antenna setup, research first, decide.

DIY is just that, free/cheap technology is just that. You wouldn't whinge about Linux free distro.

It's always choices, do I pay a plumber 700 quid to move a bath and handbasin or do I take a chance and do it myself? Do I read up and learn about Win10 or pay an expert to sort it? I'll come round and guarantee to fix your machine for a grand. If not, I'll get you a new laptop and still be quids in.

You don't need the CD for for digital cameras. Most, if not all makers have their software and updates available online.

Hi,

I'm finding my way around Win10. The Num Lock is playing games with me; when I log on entering my password sometimes no problems at other times my password is rejected because the Num Lock isn't activated; how weird?

Now I know my digi camera is L28 I've no problem hooking it up to the computer; as with anything new its just a matter of a learning curve. I'm actually settling down very quickly with Win10 now it's installed; it's easy to forget it is also free? Installation of Win10 was very easy. :huray:

Kind regards, Col.

I've just installed the win7 start menu (3rd party) on win 8.1 and aside from having to do 2 extra clicks to avoid the opening app page (there is probably a way around this) all is well on my custom build.

I looked at the speed comparisons of the two systems and overall win10 seems a tad faster, a few percent, except on writing to ssd hard drive which I do most of all so I'll stick with win8.1

The only issue I'll have is if 8.1 clogs and slows badly - but after about 12 months all is still blazing fast and it is packed full of stuff I've had to install for one reason or another.

Don't forget - upgrade isn't free forever. Once the grace period is up for the offer, it's a pay process (unless you've upgraded then gone back and not significantly changed hardware, should you wish to then go back to 10 again).

Jeez you're a baby and loving it 'retired'! You want to go back to unpasteurised milk and pony and trap?
None of these things are insurmountable but they do require you think. As in all things here, DIY or pay someone.
You can regedit the (first) lock screen away. Not hard at all. You can disable password screen if you choose, or use a password without numbers.

Win10 is fast and intuitive if your mind isn't set in concrete. Mine now boots up from cold to opening emails in 45 seconds, faster than any other system I ever had and on an old laptop. I get annoyed at times but then I look it up (on the very same machine, it gives me access to the whole world). I then use my judgement, risk making a mistake and learn.

Its just a fekkiin box of plastic and metal when all is said and done, built by clever men and women to do a universal job as far as possible, control it. If you don't like Win10, buy an Apple, if you don't like that, go linux. If you don't like that just watch TV all day.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many thanks for your replies and patience. Replies as seen above are most unhelpful and discouraging and most unwelcome to me offering little by way of information. The majority of forum members rub along very well indeed helping each other out when a member encounters a problem; I was under the impression I could discuss problems and seek advice on just about anything allowing me to gain much needed information leading to a successful outcome where I not only complete whatever job I'm attempting to do but also to gain knowledge and experience hence encouragement to tackle bigger and harder projects. No I wouldn't pay a plumber £700 to move a bath and hand basin; I would have asked for information on UHM and hoped for sound helpful advice in return? I haven't a clue about Linux or distro and I'm not interested in either; as to 2 billion satisfied users being wrong I'm just one user having teething problems? I don't want to buy an apple; I don't want to go Linux And I certainly don't want to watch TV all day; what I did want was information which I can understand just to enable me to boot up my computer with Num Lock activated by default? I'm always polite and courteous trying my best going out of my way to help others without showing how clever I am by talking down to anyone or causing any offence whatsoever. I openly admit I'm not the sharpest tool in the kit but neither am I a doormat.

Many others are having similar problems to me with the Num Lock on Win10; it's not the end of the world but I'm pleased to add an update if of interest or use. When I initially installed Win10 a message appeared stating "Working on it" this was fine until about six hours later when it was still working on it so not the best introduction to Win10? I persevered and eventually installed Win10; all appeared well and I logged off and back on a couple of times just to check and yes everything was fine. I then switched off at the mains and later when I returned to log on I found Win10 opening screen appear but I found I couldn't log on because my password was being rejected; this was most puzzling because I had been running Win10 briefly and my password had been accepted; I was totally lost and highly frustrated. Unable to log on and not knowing how to get around the problem I re-installed my original Win7. Later I was kindly informed by a member that perhaps the Cap or Num lock hadn't activated?

I installed Win10 once again and this time the information kindly given was correct the Num Lock wasn't activated; in over 16 years of computer use I've never had to activate Num Lock hence I totally missed this. :dunno:

To bring the story up to date and hopefully to help others who are similar to me with limited computer skills whilst trying to find the way around Win10. I use the right hand side of my keyboard for numbers and always have done so it being so natural to me because I'm right handed. In my ignorance I completely missed using the numbers to the top of the keyboard however after a lot of playing around yesterday I found the num lock doesn't need to be activated to use the numbers at the top of the keyboard; I simply did not know and it never ever occurred to me otherwise I could have settled with Win10 the first time I installed it? A further revelation which I've just found out this morning is that when the opening screen appears at boot up I don't need to click on the icon at the bottom right; all I need to do is to ignore the opening screen and simply type in my password including numbers but using the numbers to the top of the keyboard and suddenly I'm logged in but above all my problem is solved because this automatically activates the Num Lock. :huray:

I posted my problems with Win10 in the hope that a member could assist by offering an easy to understand explanation as to what I should do; I really do appreciate the replies from all you members who have tried to help but in the end after many hours of frustration I've stumbled across a solution which now works for me.

Sorry if I'm thick but I needed help rather than belittlement and a put down.

Kind regards, Col.

It might be easier to switch to a PIN number for signing in Colin. I think you have to set this up in your Microsoft account first and then on your W10 settings you can adjust it from password to PIN. On my computer I just tap the 'num lock' key and then type in my PIN making it less frustrating. :thumbright:

Hi,

Many thanks for the information DWD; using a PIN to log on with is new to me and I've just set my computer to accept a PIN instead of the password. I had to create a Microsoft account first as you kindly suggested which was easy enough; next I received an email from Microsoft to verify my email address was correct. I set the new PIN by going into "Settings"; Sign in options and select PIN.

Once it was set up I logged off to test it and was shut out at my first attempts to log in using my new pin but after playing around a bit the PIN is now accepted so I think all is well? I'll see how I get on over the next few log ins but so far I'm pleased. :thumbleft: I need to use the numbers at the top of the keyboard to enter my PIN but then the Num Lock activates which isn't a problem now I understand what to do. :huray:

By heck BG your information really does bring us up to date; a bit over the top for me but well worth knowing so many thanks for taking the trouble to post it; much appreciated and I'll have a good look at it shortly in more detail. :salute:

WOW after an appalling day of snow; sleet and rain yesterday the sun is shining and I've been pottering around today bringing a smile to my face for change;

Kind regards, Col.

No worries. It's cheap, but it's got to be worth a punt for a 10'er. Much prefer the other ones, but they are usually 70+ and much quicker at reading prints.

The only downside of using a finger print is that you seldom use a password....then when you need it, you can't remember it!
