Lodge 120m2 extension - my most ambitious DIY project!!
Thanks for the encouragement guys...
Constant battle against the weather...but progress none the less!
My father in law & best mate came over on Saturday and we commenced cutting & installing the jack rafters at the back door corner:

Then moved onto building the dwarf wall above the corner with the bifold doors. Got this sheeted with OSB then covered with foil.

This leaves the hip rafter, 3 common, & the jack rafters to finish this area - hopefully Saturday!
This corner at the bifold will be vaulted full height as a feature.
Also got the ridge beam on this side extension to return back towards the main extension roof to install then I can install the valley boards & jack valley rafters.

Re: Lodge 120m2 extension - my most ambitious DIY project!!
Hi All,
We have been making steady progress on the build thanks to a long weekend!
Got the other hip rafter & jack rafters in on this bifold corner side (just got 2 short jack rafters to add):

Got the rafter tails cut, 20x195mm timber facia board installed, 5U eaves felt & Kingspan nilvent membrane on before we commenced slating. New wood roll & stainless steel straps added which will secure the lead on the ridges:

Got the 25x25mm tilting strip added to the valley and dressed the code 5 lead, 450mm wide up the valley. Max 1.5m length:

Added the valley boards onto the main roof extension to return the side extension into each other, then positioned the ridge beam (45x195 C24):

Started to cut the rafter ends & commence the sarking on the side extension:

Repeated the same at the other side by adding in valley lead & commence slating:

Added the lead to the valley between main & side extension. Still to finish sarking this side - 9 boards to complete:

Got one side of the valley rafters cut & installed:

That is where she stands....
hoping to get the other side valley rafters cut @ the weekend along with completing the sarking. I can then get some protect membrane over this which will help to get everything weather right after for the opening where the flat roof will be!

Re: Lodge 120m2 extension - my most ambitious DIY project!!
Hi all, I hope you guys are getting ready for Santa! I am having to get all the prep ready for my flat roof contractor who is scheduled for 19th Dec!
Anyway...
Duplicate picture in this last thread for some reason...should have been this one:

Got the rafter tails plumb & level cut on the rear pitched roof, got the protect membrane on:

Finished the side extension sarking on the front elevation, cut along the hip & protected:

Onto the next lift with the slates on the long side:

This ceiling in the lounge will remain vaulted with rafters filled with 110foil insulation with 32.5mm insulated plasterboard onto rafters.
This should be a nice feature & make the space appear more open:

Weekend main tasks include getting the flat roof extended back to the original house, lead work, slating, scaffolding, etc ....

Lodge 120m2 extension - my most ambitious DIY project!!
Hi All!
Progressed with the slating & leadwork on the pitched roofs that join onto the flat roof. Needed this done before the 19th Dec as this was when the single ply roofing specialists were due... few late nights on the roof with my site lights to ensure everything was in order:

They had requested a timber kerb around transition edge to allow their profiled edge to be attached to. I drilled & tapped this M8 @ 600mm centres.

I then finished off levelling the 45x145 C16roof joists @ 400mm centres. The firing strips were added to the top of these:

The 18mm plywood deck was then secured to the joists @ 150mm centres along the joists.
The single ply membrane installer from Perth arrived early on the 19th. I had agreed with them that I would supply them the 40mm Kingspan Optim-R & Kingspan TR27 insulation for them to install. They were happier with this as they were offering a 20year warranty on the roof system.
First task was to clean & dry off plywood with blow torch before applying IKO primer.

After this the IKO self adhesive vapour control layer was applied.

The guys then worked from the original house roof back. This first flat roof area will be uninhabited therefore no OPTIM-R will be installed at this area. The Optim-R which are vacuum insulated panels (VIP) aren't cheap @ £100/m2, so just TR27 gets installed which is a tissue backed insulation for fully adhered roof constructions.

As you can see dry fitting the OptimR & TR27 overlay before glueing each layer down on top of each other:

IKO Armourplan, slate grey colour which is a fleece backed membrane is then fully adhered to the TR27:

I installed a 300mm lead flashing at the transition onto the slates pitch roofs. The installers then folded a flashing which sits ontop of the lead which they then PVC welded the membrane to this creating a weathertight seal.

So I am now fully watertight under the main flat roof! Just need to finish the side extension rafters, sarking, slating over the holidays!
Oh ordered the Velux twin terrace from roofing superstore which is due onsite 23/Jan! Will be interesting fitting this...as looks quite involved but I love a challenge!
Oh and even more exciting is that our first born is due on the 5th Jan! [emoji41]
Wishing all UHM forum members a Merry Christmas!

It'll be fine mate!! Plenty videos on YouTube that'll give a helping hand.
They are really good quality windows, the ones you are getting are a pig to fit, especially the flashings!!
It'll be good to see the process of fitting them if you post them on here.
You are more than capable of fitting them given the standard of your joinery work so far which is excellent.

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!!
Been working hard over the holidays...
Got the velux sun tunnel installed on the long pitch roof side, finished slating on the original house into the valley, roofing irons removed, scaffolding lowered:

Got the two lower jack rafters cut & installed:
Also got the last 5 valley rafters cut & installed:

Rafter tails cut & sarking fitted on back face:

I cut rafter tails on the end face yesterday and today I finished sarking the pitched roof on end of the side extension. Will get membrane on this tomorrow:

Got 50 sheets of P5 chipboard delivered & up to the first floor... over 1ton!

Plan to install the flooring down tomorrow!

Somehow or other I've only just clicked with this truly fascinating and inspiring 'thread'.
My admiration is boundless and to post up your plans and progress is an indicator (IMO) of your generosity of spirit.
The encouragement, tips and well-founded advice from so many reflects the spirit of camaraderie I 'feel' from reading so many posts.
Thank you ALL, and
AAA HAPPY NEW YEAR

PS
Another new word for my Glossary = sarking
"Typically a Scottish practice, the roofing underlay is laid directly over a series of sarking boards fixed to the roof rafters with the roof slates nailed directly to the sarking boards."
What a great idea!
Where does the word 'come' from, please?

Re: Lodge 120m2 extension - my most ambitious DIY project!!
I think it's just a Scottish term tbh. Sarking boards are only used when a roof is being slated as it gives a good nailing point for slates, they are generally 120-150mm wide and 18-22mm thick.. If it's tiles going on the roof is covered in plywood or osb, felted then counterbattened before the tile battens are attached.AAA.Handy.Man wrote:PS
