Brick slips

I am wanting to affix some, approx 3m2, of brick slips to a wall. The wall currently has a 10mm render coat on it. Would you advise affixing to this render or should I remove the render and affix directly to the brickwork. The brick slips are
20mm thick, and weigh about 30KG/m2
