USB to Lan query

Post by wine~o »

Been trying to get a new laptop. 3 ordered and delivered and every one was faulty straight out of the box.

I've now found one that has the spec I need but there is no LAN socket on the laptop... I have seen adaptors that plug into the usb socket on the laptop and have the connector for the router cable on the other end.

are they any good and do they slow the internet speed from the router ?

I currently get about 39 Mbps plugged in and about half that on wi-fi

Anything else I should consider ?

As long as you are plugging into a USB 2 or 3 port then the USB can handle much faster data transfer speeds than a LAN port so should be fine. I doubt any laptop now is sold with anything less than USB 2.

what laptop/notebook ? I'm happy with my dell

What router do you have it must be an old wireless G, I have an Intel AC card and get - 2.4 Ghz 72.2Mb - 5 Ghz 325Mb, if you are in a built-up area use InSSider and move radio channels to a less congested one (the number of people that just use the default setup is unreal)

If its a weak signal install another access point or range extender

New laptop will be a Lenovo V15 256Gb SSD 8Gb ram.

The router is just what talktalk sent out when we signed up for FTC broadband.

Since moving the router away from the printer stand (metal) I'm getting much better wi-fi speed, ( 30 Mbps =)

If you are next to the router in the same room within 2-3m, you should get similar speeds as wired one but as you move away to different room and floor, the signal will suffer and speed will drop. I have seen people recommending wifi boosters/repeaters/extenders to solve the problem, haven't used them and not all them work properly.

I'm happy with 30 + Mbps on wi-fi, used to get 11 Mbps plugged in before upgrading to FTC. Seems the printer stand was acting like a partial Faraday cage and blocking the signal.

A 5ghz access point will help, if you want a lan adapter the 3.0 usb one from dlink works well, pluggable do some cost-effective ones too

New laptop arrived Monday and incredibly the wireless broadband speed on the new laptop is alnost as good as plugged in on the old laptop about 38 mbps compared to 39 mbps download.

It's really nice to have a properly working laptop again, old one would only boot from an external drive and the keyboard was f3ck3d

This is the 4th new laptop since lockdown. First 3 all arrived with faults.
