Valve cover Refurbishment

Taken the rocker cover of my engine as the original paint was beginning to get patchy.

So nitro mors , white spirt, swarfega , jet wash and rub over with thinners . Next mask up spot faces and paint

Not normally the sort of thing to post here , but pleased with outcome so far.

I saw a liquid refurbishment in an American Youtube video I watched. The stuff made a plastic valve cover look like brand new, not that painted look like some refinshing plastic revivers give. I had a quick look but I can not find it again easily, I will see if I can spot it but it may not be available in the UK. It was marvelous stuff though, I was well impressed.

I am spraying it with high temp red paint , mat finish

Impressed with the cleanliness! Not for me to judge but I reckon a nice red crinkle finish paint would do it a favour. Black highlights and bare aluminium where it suits.

The original was a red semi crinkle , the cover for the top of the coil packs is crinkle black with polished Ali wording

Sorry, I got this wrong as I was looking at the image on my phone last night and did not realise it was metal, I thought it was one of those plastic valve covers you see these days. Hence me blarting on about a plastic reviver.

Don't you need an etching primer for ally?

The paint I have says no primer required ! Lol yes normally etch bond primer for Ali.

I know this ended up being off topic but you're probably referring to Pledge revive it. Awesome stuff!

Martin Butler (Retro Restore on Youtube) uses it all the time on plastic parts

Have you considered anodising? Apparently it's a DIY process if you check the Youtubes on it. Might be difficult given the size of the item but you've done such a good job on cleaning it that the prospect of anodising or even full polishing looks to be an attractive proposition.

HondaS2000 , revs like a Ferrari 9000rpm , was for ages most power from a NA production engine 120 bhp per litre until Ferrari came along with the 958

Kelly, did consider polishing but then u need to keep it up and lacquer on ones I have seen always peels. If polished which I might do one day would need the die cast fettled all over first to get decent finish.

Not sure about anodising , what the prep would be like , people have had these and other Honda covers shot blast , but there are lots of baffles riveted inside , end result has on occasion been a wrecked engine following the ingress of shot blast media. I was careful even rubbing bits down to avoid any abrasive getting in . Wife’s face was a picture when I suggested putting it in the dishwasher, might have got away with it pre lockdown.
