One of my double glazing windows is steamed up. What is the best tool to remove it, and where is the best place to buy a new one? Thanks

You need a tool like a Don Carlos knife to lift the beading. There are other purpose made blades for getting in without damaging the beading. Check Amazon. When you breack the snap fit, lever in the middle of the long lengths , you will see the glass panel held by shims in position. Meaure the glass panel and get a new unit made before the swap. Mark the beads and shims so you return them to the original position.

A stiff but thin putty/filling knife start with the longest sides, a rubber or soft mallet for reinstallation

there are lots of videos on YouTube covering the topic

Try this old duffer

Some window panes are held in at the top and Side edge with a security tape, you need to run a fairly stiff filler knife between the frame and glass pane to release it. The tape isn’t always present but if you have trouble getting it out after removing the beads then it’s the security tape that is holding it in place.

Thank you so much for the informative video. Very helpful. However, when was it made? His last remark was something like "not bad for £15."

We are after a double glazed unit of approx 40cm x 90cm. Haven't removed it yet so not an accurate measurement. The glazing is diamond leaded.

Have rung a few comapanies and have been quoted region of £80 to over £100 supply only.

You need to trace the diamond lead pattern onto some paper so the glazier can stick the lead on to match adjacent windows. That is about right for a leaded unit, I for one done for £60, as it is a fair bit of work doing the lead. So accuracy, get the beads off measure the existing panel overlay some paper, and trace the panel edge parts of the lead to show the starts and finishes of each strip so the pattern can be replicated.

Other than that call a glass man in to do it and pay a lot more.

Thank you. Had not realised how much work involved. Happy to pay that price now. Would like to try to do it myself, just for the satisfaction, but first sign of trouble with removing beading then happy to pay a professional for that too. Thanks to everyone for their interest.

I bought this last year as I had to remove my front window to get a new sofa in.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07 ... UTF8&psc=1

Depending on the size of your window you might have to buy the suckers as they're heavy. My son had to give me a hand.

It might be cheaper getting someone in to do it. I did it myself as I had loads of Amazon vouchers to use up.

Argyll, It is a small casement window so will not need the suction. I have quite a few tools that look much like the Amazon beading tools but they are old and blunt so if I decide to go DIY, I will buy a new one and a plastic tool too.

See pic below what tools I used today. Knife to insert between bead and frame and a gentle wiggle enough to slide in the scrapper to lift the bead.

To re fit, silicone lube beads and window, push in gently with rubber hammer.

Make a note of beads locations to use same.

Patience is virtue.

Yartin. Thanks. Had that very tool in the shed. Used it, and it worked! Did not use a stanley knife. Found a stiff plastic tile adhesive spatula and used that. Thanks to all for help and encouragement.
