Hi all, bit of a long shot here but I'm considering buying a petrol powered woodchipper/shredder, for dealing with all the green waste that I generate quite regularly through my landscaping work.
At the moment everything has to be rammed into the van and taken to the tip - very laborious and time consuming and I think I would get enough use out of a chipper to justify the cost.
I've looked at a few videos on youtube of various types in action, some look to be struggling with even thin stemmed stuff, they mostly are the 5 - 6hp Briggs and Stratton type ones, so I think I want a 15hp one, but which is small enough to go in the van (as opposed to towing it.)
Anyone have experience of using these? Anyone got one for sale?
Thanks.

Petrol woodchippers - any pointers?
Post by dewaltdisney »
I bought one last year. I got the Hyundai see https://hyundaipowerequipment.co.uk/gar ... -shredder/ it was cheaper than the slightly bigger motor of the next model but I did not think it was worth the extra for 12cc of additional power.
It says it will chip up to 60mm branches but quite frankly it has to work really hard to chew them up and I stick to mostly 1" stuff as it goes through easy. I log the thicker bits as I know lots of people who want them for their log burners. It is not really a shredder and you have to be careful not to choke the shute compressing loose green stuff.
I used it to demolish a load of laurel cuttings that was as big as a container by size. I would not be without it now.
I did bugger mine up due to my own mistake. I had used it so much the blades got dull and I unbolted and reversed them as they are double edged. I must have not done them up tight enough and a blade worked loose and catastrophically jammed the machine at full speed, buggered the engine and tore a hole in the shroud...knackered. After feeling sorry for myself I got focused and bought a brand new identical generic engine which was only £99 and I cold fettled the metal rip back into shape. I already had a new set of blades but I replaced the bolts with new longer ones and used Loctite. I got it going again and it works fine so now I am more careful and respectful during use.
If it is a trade use you are looking at the bigger machines are a better bet I think. Genpower are a good supplier, it came in a crate and I had to assemble it.

I had this type perhaps a bit smaller and spent more time unclogging it than work; the funnel would only take almost straight branches and the hopper, if wet green stuff it would just churn and not shred.
