Clarke Angle Grinder not working

Post by zaffy »

I have an angle grinder which does not work.
I have watched videos and there seems to be a lot of disecting and I fear I'll not get the thing back together again.
I have started with the basics. Check fuse. It had a 5amp in. I replaced it with a 13amp because the plug said 13amp.
Still not working.
I see that the brushes are easy to replace.
Will worn brushes stop a power tool working? If so, how do I tell if the brushes are worn down enough to be the problem?

Yes, worn brushes will stop a tool from working, best method to tell is to compare with (or fit) a new set. There will often be excessive sparking noticeable from worn brushes. Yours do look a bit short - how old is the tool, and has it done a lot of work?

Your is showing as the size it should do for 1152 × 723 pixels. If it was much larger it wouldn't post as there is a size limit.

Ayjay, thanks for responding so quickly. What does one call a lot of work when it comes to angle grinders? It is old, so possibly has seen a lot of work in its lifetime. But there again, it had a DIY owner and not a professional owner, who, I presume would use it far more.

Re: Photos. Thanks. I was concerned I might be taking up too much space.

Those brushes look well worn to me. Find some pics of the right brushes and compare.
Have you checked the cable for cuts?

Dave,
Just noticed, the other brush is even shorter. Have ordered a couple from EBay. Under £6 free P&P. Will keep Ultimate posted on my progress.

:stop: :stop: :stop: Plugs are (almost) always rated at 13 A, that's the maximum a single socket should provide; The fuse can be anything up to 13 A but should Never be changed for a higher rated fuse. before you do anything change it back to a 5 Amp fuse.

TBH I'm surprised no-one else picked up on that.

Wine. Yes. I should have reposted. I noticed after posting the comment that the lable on the machine said 5amp. I did change it back. Another learning curve.
Thank you.

The fuse protects the CABLE, not the equipment. If the cable is 1mm core section or greater then a 13A fuse is acceptable - though not always practical. Without knowing the cable size the fuse should, of course, be as per the manufacturers recommendation.

A 5A fuse leans towards the angle grinder being 750W or less.

Hate to say this, but are they the right ones? Old ones look wider in the shot.

Dave, bringer of bad tidings. Hope the photo is an optical illusion. The advert stated to fit my model. I haven't tried them yet. I will keep you posted.

 Bad tidings? Who me? :hiding:
Easy enough to compare them before trying to fit.
Don't fit them if they're narrower. They need to be a nice sliding fit in the brush boxes, but not too loose.
Won't be the first time, I've had "That's the one that fits sir" with all sorts of things, only to find that they actually fitted several different types.
