Do I need to plaster the plasterboards?

Hi team,

I am planning to renovate a room In my house, I have seen enough videos online and I feel confident enough to go ahead and fix the ceiling by removing the old plasterboard and replacing it as well as doing so in one of the walls. My question is simple, after I fix the corners and cover all the joins with tape and compound and after covering the screws, do I need to apply the plaster too?
I have seen people adding 3 coats of plaster on plasterboards but I have noticed that none of them was actually working on fixing the joins with tape or covering the screws. So I wonder if those are two different ways :dunno:

Any help will be appreciated!

Regards

First question, Yes.

Plasterboard is the base finish, it is inherently 'soft' & coated with paper, also soft. It is, a base.

Plaster, on the other hand - gypsum - skimmed over this ^^ base gives a hard, smooth, even surface to accept emulsion paint.

Second part, depends on circumstances, if sub-base is sound (no movement) & skim thick enough (good plasterer) jointing may not be needed - but always good practice anyway.

Sample of ceilings in my holiday villa's bedrooms without plaster or Artex, one already with light coat of emulsion; they are more than 5 years old now and still standing but could do with redecorating, they would not pass a fussy H.W.
Walls a different matter :withstupid:

Just get a plasterer in to skim it. They do it all the time and will do it properly and it should be under £200. You can cut costs by painting the first sealer coat of diluted PVA so he only has to call once.

DWD.

Thank you all for your replies, I'll add the plastering to the estimate then.

Thank you again!
