Mini Chainsaw Review for LondonMike

After Mike put the idea of one of these in my head I decided to give it a go and ordered one off Amazon. It turned up in under 24 hours on Monday. For £31 I was not expecting Stihl quality but I was actually surprised as it is a well-made tool. 24v cordless it comes with a battery, charger, two spare chains, tools, and gloves. I charged it up and it was work ready for this morning.

I wanted to cut an awkward area that I have been putting off and I had difficulty getting my tripod ladder into a safe position and tied for extra security. I was cutting through some 2" vertical branches so I cut a V on one side and then a diagonal cut from the other to avoid pinch. It was so easy one-handed and worked a treat. Before long I had a mountain of green waste so I called a halt and got my chipper to mulch it all. I have to say I was very impressed and I felt safe throughout cutting at height.

One thing I think needs mentioning is that there is no chain oiler so I gave it a squirt with 3 in 1 oil when I stopped to tighten the blade after a few cuts and it had stretched a bit.

So thanks for the heads up Mike, I do not think you have to spend fortunes for one if it is only an occasional use tool.

Search Amazon for Mini Cordless Chainsaw, Mini Electric Chainsaw 4-Inch 3000mAh Strangely, it is now showing £41 on my Amazon view which might be different from yours as I bought one??

I've got a baby sthil 171 petrol. Still it has to be respected. Sure it could result in a nasty accident.

Bit of a difference between £279 and £31 Oz

Those smaller petrol chainsaws are what the tree surgeons use up high. I have used my little saw for three sessions now, it works great. As far as I am concerned I have written it off at a tenner a time so all further use is a bonus.

The cordless ones in whatever brand of better you keep look a good middle of the road option. Must be durable as will have the manufacturer warranty. Not the throwaway price like yours though.

Yep, mine is definitely a throwaway. That is why I weigh use at a tenner a time and write it off. However, the battery seems to charge well, I have done three recharges even though it did not run out in use. It seems to have plenty of power in use and with two spare chains to go, It seems to have legs. It has so far lived up to expectations. I realise that I was lucky and got it at an Amazon spot sale where they drop the price to get things moving. I got mine for £31 but the right price is £41. By comparison, Mrs D and I had a meal out that was £50 last night. I sh*t it out this morning.

You must have got the last one DWD @ 3000 mAh, I took an interest and found a 6" on e-bay item # 353585433760, but no extra battery or accessories; the reason I chose it was it had a safety button and the trigger was protected.

To be fair Aero the battery last ages and seems to charge in an hour so do not worry about deals that have two, mine has only one battery with two spare chains. Check out Amazon.

Yes, that is the one I meant. The batteries are only 2000ah and 550w. Mine has a 3000ah battery but only one. The 3000 has a longer use period I understand. I have not run out of power in use yet.

Further review:

I have finally completed my 100 foot Laurel hedge reduction thank god. I had taken my eye off it and after 25 years the tops had got to 30 feet. The hedge is around 8 foot deep making it hard to reach the middle. I have now got it back to 12 foot height but what a bloody job. I have tackled it using various tools but I wish I had the mini chainsaw from the start as it is just so safe, useful, and easy to use up a ladder.

The process has been to cut the upper branches off, cart the whole into my temporary green waste pile. Then all the branches of around 1" thickness go through my chipper and the heavier timber is put to one side in manageable lengths for disposal. I have done it in sections over the summer so as to not get overwhelmed, but doing the final push last Friday, my neighbour helped me and we knocked out the last 20 foot and I had a massive pile of waste left. It took seven hours to clear over the last few days and my back aches today but I am relieved it is finished.

Back to the little saw, I cannot recommend these enough. It never ran out of power despite being used for hours. I changed the blade once as it was getting dull. I can think of lots of times I will use it now as I cannot be arsed to haul out the proper saws. My neighbour was impressed and I could not get it off him as he enjoyed using it so much. I have bought him one from eBay as a thank you which was only £18, chuckaway money.

So thanks to Mike for the heads up on a great little tool, every home should have one.

Where did you get the replacement chain from? Because I have been looking at replacement and I think it was Amazon that had 3 chains for a reasonable price but the reviews weren’t that great.

My saw came with three chains. I do not think the chains are inferior I think the problem is that people do not oil or tension them in use. The chain has to be taut and well lubricated as it will wear out quicker if not. I think a lot of folk put them on back to front too.

Have a look at these Rotatech chains on Amazon 2 (Two) 4" 10cm Rotatech Chainsaw Saw Chains Fits Stihl GTA 26 £14. I have used Rotatech chains for years on my bigger saws and they give good service. I never resharpen, I just get new ones.

I'm about to take delivery of an Aldi battery chainsaw - £50 but no battery. Since I already have 4 of their big batteries and two chargers anyway, this was the reason I went for their chainsaw. The purchase is for Mrs k_e anyway as she's tigher than a ducks arse with wood 'scraps' and loves chopping up branches for firewood - currently using my chop saw

and no chance of me stopping her!

If you have any Aldi tools and their battery range then £50 for a bare chainsaw doesn't seem too bad - I understand it's a whole level of quality higher than DWD's version but I'll report on it anyway to make a comparison.
