I've used Weathershield Trade quick-drying gloss (and satin) after the Weathershield quick-drying undercoat several times now and it's always been really good. I used it a couple of weeks ago on a front and back door. The customer left the doors open for at least 7 hours before closing them (I drove past 7 hours after I had finished and I could see the front door was still propped open) but the next morning the doors were sticking. She's only told me about it yesterday so I have only just been to have a look. There are white lines were the doors stuck to the rubber seal and the door was still sticking when I called this evening. The doors are dry and they feel it - no tackiness at all - but, even now, there is a suction between the door and the seal. Could it be a problem with the seal i.e. has it reacted to the paint and deteriorated in some way? The seal isn't sticky at all. Has anyone else experienced this?

A lot of these exterior trim paints are of necessity, flexible and quite 'soft' (for lack of a better word) In that regard, rubber seals don't often do well against them, even if the surface is touch dry. It really depends on how tight the door is when its closed I guess. Removing the draught seal for a day or two, though perhaps a bit drastic, will create the space for the paint to part cure to a sufficient degree without marking.

Rubber/plastic seals around doors, from a decorating point, are a PITA. Much like gripper rods, but I digress.

I’ve not used weathershield paint but have used similar water based gloss for that sort of thing and found that if I give the seal a wipe over a couple of times with WD40 the stickiness goes away.

I have finally decided: no more outside work! Only had three booked in this year but the weather meant all three had to be re-scheduled several times and this problem with the paint / seal is the last straw.

I've been on the fence about outside work for years, for the same reason. It's not that I dislike it, but bad weather can throw a schedule out of sync in a couple of days and you wind up chasing your tail for long enough.

FWIW, I know a few decs that have tried dumping outsides, and it did seem to hurt their work more than expected. If you don't do a lot of exteriors, or your regular customers are loyal enough, it may be feasible.

Had this problem too which is one of many reasons why I don’t do outsides anymore. I’m sure the sunlight strength has changed too.

When push comes to shove customers aren’t that loyal. You can do your best and go the extra mile but in my experience it’s one sided in the long run. Sad but true. I expect a few will say different imo if they can get someone as good for cheaper etc they will.

I've not experienced the problem myself but have worked with decorators who would give seals a wipe with a vaseline coated rag prior to shutting.

I should have posted an update about this...

I went back a few weeks ago, wiped the seals with a bit of meffs, put tape on them (Q1 Delicate Surface), painted the doors, and told the customer to leave the tape on for a few days if possible and to leave the doors ajar until bedtime. I drove past at 6pm and the front door was already shut tight. (Maybe I should have asked when their bedtime was.) Got a call three days later to say she had removed the tape and the doors aren't sticking any more.
