Tiling a small porch floor- complete novice

Post by CG12 »

Hi All,

Having been made recently redundant my wife is putting me to work to all the DIY jobs that need doing in the house, one of them being retiling the Samar porch at the front of the house.

I have removed the old tiles (mostly cracked or chipped) and have taking up as much of the old tile adhesive as possible, although it seems impossible to remove all of it. I still need to wash the floor properly.

I thought the floor was level but it clearly isn’t, there is a small ridge in the middle.

Ive included a photo of the floor and the tiles we are using.

My questions are:

1) how do I level the floor?
2) Have I removed enough of the old adhesive for the new tiles to bond properly?
3) What adhesive would you recommend? I don’t want anything that sets too quickly as it’s my first time ever tiling.

Thank you all in advance!

Get some self levelling compound to prepare the area. Tape the shape on a carpet and lay your tiles with spacers to get a nicely balanced lay pattern. Measure the grid to find the centre and work laying and fixing the tiles centre out. Use a comb to get the adhesive level and uniform and a level to get it flat. Do the cuts for the edges last. Let it set for a few days and grout.
