Plastering over old loft hatch

Post by DearDIYers »

Hi. We are about to have our ceiling at the top of the stairs plastered. There is an old loft hatch which is not flush to the ceiling. Would it be okay to plaster board the square where the hatch is or would we need to plaster board the full ceiling? I am concerned that if I just plasterboard the hatch, the outline will be noticeable when plastered.

Thanks 😊

Remove the old loft hatch "door" and any trim.
Pin ledgers in the opening set back at 13mm or thickness of board from ceiling surface.
Cut a piece of plasterboard to fit the opening, & fix the plasterboard up tight to the ledgers.
Cut back about 50mm of the ceiling skim on all 4 sides.
Tape all four edges.
And patch the new piece in.

Hope you dont mind me saying but be alert when working over a stair well - you'll probably be standing on a step ladder. if you've any doubts then leave the whole job to a plasterer.
