Plasterboard suggestions for a small ensuite

Hi everyone,

I am planning to remove the old plasterboard from the ensuite and replace it. I was thinking to replace it with a plasterboard mould resistant but I really have no idea. The project is to use plasterboard and paint on it, no cladding or PVC. Any recommendation for the type and the process?

Moisture resistant would be suitable but not in the wet areas unless you are prepared to run the risk that your paint finish is up to it and then you are relying on a max of 0.005" thickness for 3 coats.
I squeegee my shower tiles after each shower, paint will not stand up to that or abrasive cleaners, because eventually mould will appear.

I can understand that you are reluctant to skim it but for a small area, it is quite within the realms of DIY. Fix the board up as neat and tight as possible, scrim tape the joins, and paint a dilute PVA solution on the boards. Let it dry and then, when you have knocked up a tub of Multifinish plaster, dilute PVA again, and while wet skim over. As the PVA prevents suction the plaster will stay workable for some time allowing you to get it straight. You can always go over with a finish plaster if you are not happy.

Humm yeah I think that I'll follow your suggestion and skim it, it's a very small area so it won't take too long. Would this be to heavy to put in the ceiling?

Also, the walls seems to be in brick and are already plastered, I was planning to remove the paint, skim them very lightly to make really smooth and then paint them again.
What would be the best procedure here when putting tape between the ceiling and the wall joins?
Is the following the best procedure?

1. Remove old paint from walls
2. Fix the plasterboard in the ceiling
3. Tape the joins and the ones between the ceiling and walls
4. Put PVA and skim ceiling
5. Put PVA on the walls and give a quick skim
6. Paint everywhere

I have seen many videos where both the walls and the ceiling were in plasterboards but I didn't find any to see who you tape the join between an existing plastered wall in bricks and a ceiling with plasterboards.

Is it really necessary to skim the walls? Just sand the walls over to key and remove any loose stuff and then paint over. You will find that if the new ceiling board is fitted snug the plaster can be feathered into the corner and edge joints. The 12.5 board is fine for such a small span.

So you mean to just sand the walls and then plaster just the bit at the top where ceiling and walls meets to cover the tape joint?

I see small cracks in the walls and I am not sure yet if those are only in the paint or in the plaster

I would only plaster the ceiling and feather the edges to the wall. The wall should not need any plaster just smooth and paint it after the ceiling is done. You can run a thin blade between wall and ceiling to prevent cracks from any shrinking during the drying. You can fill and paint over any small cracks at any time in the future as necessary.
