Which File Tools to Have for Home DIY?

Post by ugoleaf »

Hello,

I have an old small file tool which is dull and one big which is good but a bit coarse.
I was wondering what are the most utilized file tools home DIY folks use at their home.
And what is the difference between flat file and hand file?

There is flat file, round file, half-round file, square file and triangular file with different grades and different cuts.
I know that I don't need rough grade file tool but no idea what cuts.

I need file for fining small things like plastics and metals. I also wonder why there are 6-inch, 8-inch files and almost 10-inch files. For me 6-inch file would be enough...
Maybe flat fine file would be enough for me at home or maybe I should consider additional file with different shape? Square shape or rectangular shape?

Thanks

It's a bit like asking "Which is the best screwdriver", there are many different shapes and sizes for a reason as they all have their uses and situations in which you would reach for each.

If you think a 6" Flat file would work for you, then that's the tool to reach for. Most would simply have a combination set of files that cover most situations.
