What Hacksaw Should I Get?

Post by ugoleaf »

My old one looks like one from mid 50s of previous century. I am wondering which one from picture should I get. It is for infrequent home DIY work. What should I be looking for in hacksaw?

Thanks

It's been said on this forum that a jigsaw is only as good as the blades and that is largely true of hacksaws too. One that takes regular easy to obtain blades would be one aspect i'd be looking for and decent ones are adjustable for longer or shorter blades. A pistol type handle gives better control and most if not all of the saws i've seen recently have that feature although an older one i have has a file type handle. To be honest if you only want one for occasional use and you already have one albeit a little old i'd stick with what you have if you can still get the blades for it.

About a year ago I bought this one https://www.screwfix.com/p/bahco-24tpi- ... 00mm/88800 and like you I only use it occasionally. So far it has done what needed to be done without any issues.

Just saying, from the pictures, they all look like junior hacksaws. (Junior hacksaws are smaller) I like London mike 61's suggestion.
Above are my opinions Below is my signature.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

My eyesight must be playing me up because I read the text but didn’t pay much attention to the pictures  anyways, as for junior hacksaws I’ve got one of these https://www.screwfix.com/p/bahco-32tpi- ... 50mm/9513k because they are cheap and cheerful.
I’ve also got this one that lives in my everyday tool bag https://www.toolstation.com/eclipse-mini-hacksaw/p89758.

I bought a common bent steel rod type Junior Hacksaw back in 1974. I also have an old Stanley large frame hacksaw I acquired somewhere along the way years ago. I bought replacement blade packs for both in Poundland and I am still on those as needed. They have proved to be good, I have never seen them since. The junior gets used most for odd little jobs, bigger cut requirements tend to bring the angle grinder with thin cutting discs into play.

These hacksaws on photos are from ****** ranging from $12-20 in price. I wonder if their blades are of different standard than blades in the rest of the world. If they are, I wouldn't find them locally probably but for a rare use maybe these will suffice?

This is the one (50cm) with rusty dull blade (29cm) I have but on the close-up photo there's a metal cylinder that is supposed to hold the blade in place but it's turned slightly which doesn't align its slot with blade and makes blade a bit twisted when secured. It's the reason why sometimes it gets stuck in the middle of the job. I will see if I can turn it with locking pliers or groove pliers.

I've got one similar at least with regards to the handle. It is an adjustable one and the blades just fit onto lugs and it's tensioned with a wing nut just the same as yours. I can't quite see what sort of blade you have in yours . I tend to fit the bog standard metal cutting blades but yours doesn't look like one of those.

The blade I have is rusty and I would need to buy a thinner one because this one is a bit rough for delicate jobs.

I will try to adjust that pin with lug because it's misaligned. It was twisted out of its place and I will try to fix it.

Or maybe I should just buy one of small hacksaws for delicate jobs?

These are the sort of blades i use and understand as hacksaw blades
https://www.screwfix.com/p/magnusson-24 ... pack/9262v
Just picked from a random quick search , not necessarily the make i actually use.
Personally as these tools aren't the most expensive bits of kit in the world I prefer to have both a small and regular size though i use the later more. The bent steel rod junior hacksaws are perfectly fine and frankly there's nothing to go wrong with them. I'm sure i made one when at school. One thing to remember is that these are by and large for cutting metal . A good thing to have to use these tools with is a vice of some sort to hold the metal while you're cutting it and of course always better if the vice is bolted down. So there we are , gone from a little hacksaw to getting a bench to bolt the vice to ....

when you unscrew the handle - doesn't that whole assembly twist , and so when you put a blade in - you make sure its at the angle you want lined up with the same angle on the other end and as you twist the handle/wingnut it tensions the blade.
Like a copping saw (which i have, but not that type of hacksaw - I have a few) - so you can cut the piece without the U-Frame getting in the way
if not, and just the wingnut, then yes the blade needs to be aligned at both ends so its making the kerf cut all the way along - if twisted it may/will snag

Lugs do not twist.
