Cracks in original 1950's curved ceiling corners

Post by taveren »

Hi I'm after some advice, I need to decorate my living room but the curved corners of the ceiling are cracked. I had planned on taking it back to the brick and replastering it but my wife likes the corners and plasterwork on the ceiling. I've had a rewire so need to fix the walls, all of the 1950's plaster has hairline cracks and isn't fixed to the walls in places, mainly around the cable runs were the plaster was chased out. What would you do?

This formed plaster was a forerunner of gyproc coving which started in the 60's and those cracks are caused by movement that modern coving would cope with to a greater extent. It is a difficult one as it is going to cause a lot of mess and remedial to chop it back and make good with new coving and plaster. It would be simpler to just fill the cracks and repaint si it is your choice I guess.

Crikey, that was drastic, I hope Mrs T is happy  It does mean that once you have it all plastered up you know it is all good.

She's used to the mess by now, this is the 3rd room we've took back to the brick. The rewire damaged a lot of the plaster, patches missing around the sockets, loose plaster , fine hairline cracks all over. The house is like a building site, we got it last summer, it had been empty for 10yrs so lots of work required. She did want to keep that ceiling though. I'll have to replace it with some nice coving.

It will be worth the hard work and mess in the end. Incidentally, what was behind the curve? Was it solid plaster or an angle board plastered over?

It was a mix of what looked like normal old sand and cement plaster, the curve was a white plaster, almost like plaster of paris. It had some weight to it.

Blimey, it must have weighed a ton. Good job to get it out while you can :thumbright:
