Maintenance on a spiral staircase

Post by Vwalker »

Hi hoping someone can help, I need to get some new whatever the attached is in my photo. I’ve tried dowels and wooded plugs but not having much luck. Can someone kindly point me in the right direction please?

Thanks in advance :-)

Another option would be to ask on facebook for a local turner who would knock them up for you. Be interesting to know exactly what they do. Concur with BA looks like beech.

They are structural, they fit in the back hole of the tread and go up into the banister to provide support to the step. Based on the them having to fit tightly I’ll probably try the wood turner route

if you go the turned route avoid them using soft woods like spruce or pine as they need to use a wood that won't crush under load
and iff the plugs/pegs are tapered make sure this is replicated

i could also be miles out but it looks like perhaps through cast iron into the tread, hence the mild brown discolouration near the head :dunno:

This is a picture of the peg in situ - thanks everyone for your help so far, I thought this would be an easy thing to sort!

Can you not just glue them back in? A friction hold is hardly doing anything and I guess these are just cosmetic unless they have to be removable for access to the fitting beneath?
