Repainting Magnolia over Magnolia

Post by Onar »

Hi

I am about to repaint whole house which is already finished in Magnolia.

To repaint with Magnolia, is a Base Coat really necessary?.

Thank you. :salute:

Clean the walls down, repair any defects and go over with two coats, that will work for you. I would advise against Magnolia as it is old hat nowadays. I would swap to white, much cleaner fresher look in your home. Buy decent trade emulsion not the watery stuff from BnQ. I like Johnstones Covaplus.

Thank you.

So, I will not use Magnolia.

White sounds great as a good alternative, but I plan to let the property out.

Woodwork will be white, so, I will have to use a Silk emulsion other than white.

Thanks about not using Magnolia.

Well, avoiding magnolia is just my personal opinion. As a rental white will be much easier to freshen up as necessary between lets. I would avoid silk as the protection against grubby marks is outweighed by the difficulty in painting over at a future date. For wood trim I would use Johnstines Aqua system, a water-based paint that you can get the undercoat and topcoat on in a day.

The problem is you'll need about 3-4 coats to get rid of the magnolia as opposed to sticking to magnolia.

That is a point A, I actually went over a feature wall we had in a bathroom in a rather dated Lilac colour today. I went over with two coats of Covaplus and decided a third coat was necessary because your words were ringing in my head  . I suspect it was purely in my head as two would have been okay but it was easier to go over again while it was all masked up. Magnolia is quite pale and I think two coats would do it, the Lilac I covered in white to match the adjacent walls looks correct.

Maybe a compromise, a 50-50 white magnolia mix - makes quite a nice lighter colour, should cover in two. I always feel Mag is a tad too dark.

Many thanks for your replies.

I have decided to go with a 50/50 Magnolia and white.

Cannot mix twice, so I will select a set colour, from colour chart, probably beige, hessian etc.
