Duke of Edinburgh Award
I just picked my grandson up from his two day hiking and camping as part of his DoE award. He had a heavy knapsack and they had a hard terrain in the Chilterns doing about 15 miles a day. He is tired but enjoyed it. I am glad he did it, a DoE separates you from the couch bound.

30 miles tab over two days is good going for a 14yr old laddie

I got the bronze award in 1962, a lifetime ago! I was also a 14 year old , I didn't go for the silver as I left school soon after.

Nice to read of this kind of effort put in by him. He should be congratulated just for entering, regardless of the outcome.
Too often we read of inadequate child rearing and uncontrolled teenage yobs. The fact that there are still some out there willing to better themselves gives me a bit of hope for the future.....

Sadly youngsters fall into two groups these days, those who do and those that don't, primarily down to a lack of encouragement and motivation from parents. My son and daughter-in-law have always encouraged my grandchildren into sports and other useful pursuits. They both play hockey for their district team and go to cubs and scouts as well. My granddaughter is also well into performing arts. It shows because they are confident, get on with things and their Ipad use is kept in balance. Of course, this means a lot of time is given to ferrying them to their various activities. My son and grandson play on the same hockey team and I enjoy watching them play together when I can. I am glad they are so active and they mix with other motivated youngsters which is good.
