Had to change e-mail address

Over the last however many years I've been getting spam e-mails on occasion as I suppose most people do, some times 3 in a day sometimes none for weeks.

Over the last few weeks however I've been getting more and more spam e-mails from all over the globe. Yesterday afternoon it was so bad that as soon as blocked one sender I'd get 2 or 3 more spam mails, must have had 70+ over a couple of hours. (I was online trying to order stuff for next weeks jobs)

Anyway, 'Ive decided to set up a new e-mail address and delete the old one. Of course this means changing my e-mail addy on all the various accounts/subscriptions I have.

Some are relatively easy, log in, change e-mail, enter one time confirmation code , Done.

On a few that I've tried changing e-mail isn't even an option. You either have to set up a new account (in which case you lose any points accrued (retail sites) or contact admin which is a right PITA.

What a palaver :angryfire: :angryfire:

i had a checklist for people years ago , when emails where removed
Like the old cable company , now virgin, people who left BT and did not realise they had to pay to keep the email address ,

You will be amazed at how many sites you have used on - or for recovery backup emails

Have an email account specially for all the rubbish, i tend to do that , and not use my main account

also they have learnt how to get around blocks - email address maybe xxxx@gmail,com so you cant block gmail.com in total - so the xxx becomes 123 , 124 , 125 , 126

What i have done is
a) I unsubscribe
b) I have setup rules looking for key phrases , and move to junk

The joys of modern life ::b I can only wonder how long till they find the new email address. I have to agree though about some places will not let you change email address, or you have to set up a new account.

Well I've had that e-mail since about 2005, so hopefully not too soon...

I recently switched my business email from my website providers server to gmail. It seems a bit gimmicky to run a business from a gmail account (though it's increasingly common) but it has been a big improvement.

Not only is the spam much easier to deal with but it's also much easier for me to handle my email over multiple devices. On my old email it never worked well on anything other than my main business computer, the spam was getting out of hand and the servers ability to deal with it was very poor but worse than that I was getting flagged as spam. I was finding that customers weren't getting my replies because they were being auto deleted as spam by other servers.
Much better and much happier since I switched.

Just FYI
gmail, if something goes wrong , it can be quite difficult to deal with google , its not happened often, but a few times people get locked out and unable to get in, better now they have recovery via email and text.
Make sure you do have a valid recovery email address and a phone for text codes
I know a lot of people in the past , used their company email/phone as a recovery and had real problems when they left the company

one thing to note on gmail - the dots , make no difference - fred.bloggs@gmail.com - is the same as fredblogs@gmail.com

I prefer to set people up on outlook.com / hotmail.com free emails - as Microsoft do tend to respond to chats to solve email issues , unlike gmail
Also rather than labels , they use folders

But my main emails are gmail , and i was one of the first to get a gmail account , when it was invitation only.

just an observation having support many private and sole traders between quite a few years ago , as i say just FYI

I learned the lesson years ago about keeping a Virgin or Sky email in the fact when you cancel the subscription you can no longer access your emails. I keep a Gmail account for stuff I think I'm going to be spammed with but pay for a Protonmail account just to be really secure.

You can go into settings on most emails and add spam stuff to a blacklist.

yes, i remember now , i had loads of phone calls , when virgin stopped providing Broadband via telephone line, and transfered a lot of people to talktalk I think, i had loads of phonecalls - as they only had 30days to sort out , the email before it was cut off - thats when i created a list of possible services being used by old email - list was huge ....
I think ntlworld also had issues.

Yes important to have backups for verification etc. I have multiple gmail accounts (again I had a very early invite only account, long before android was a thing I expect) and multiple hotmail accounts (including a pre hotmail @msn account which shows my age!). With IMAP servers and thunderbird it makes it very easy to keep on top of things even using multiple devices.

I still have a Blueyonder and Tiscali account out in the ether somewhere but lost it when I moved to another ISP. Obviously deleted at some point due to non-use. I think they were linked to NTL as I recall. That was the time I learned my lesson.

I had a blueyonder account up until last year. It worked fine and then one day it stopped. It was provided by Virgin, they couldn't explain why it stopped working. Luckily I had long since migrated everything over to other accounts and I was hanging onto it mostly in case I needed any info in the older emails. Once it stopped working though I archived the emails into text files and deleted it.
