Fluted wall feature around door

Hi - I'm looking at doing something similar to this attached pic...I believe the doors in the picture attached are MDF panels but when it comes to creating the fluted effect around the perimeter, I'm just wondering how to go about this? Has the plaster been routed out? or could this be a fluted MDF panel that meets the plaster wall seamlessly. Any thoughts how to go about this would be really appreciated. thanks!

look up "making plaster mouldings " will probably a comb like wooden shape on wooden form

It looks like routed grooves. A router with carefully set guides can do this to a constructed mdf frame.. It is painted with sealer and satin paint.

one hell off a complicated job with a router you need a fence/bearing surface and stop for every slot and because the flat bit is so narrow [less than 2 router bases worth] you need 2 stops and 3 fences for every section so nuts amount off effort for the head

I don't think it is that hard with jig you could make. I knocked up a jig to cut grooves in MDF to simulate t&g boarding for a bath panel. I used a small core box bit. You could have a moveable dowel peg for the various length end stops. Not an amateur job granted,.

yes a jig is the way to go but still needs a lot off accuracy and skill to look right

Another way I"ve seen this sort of stuff done is with silicon moulds taken off exsiting mouldings. However , perhaps not one for the beginner and running one in plaster or routing can be tricky. As an alternative , cheaper and easier it could be built up from a number of pieces. It's possible to get half round stock off the shelf and glue four ( if I'm looking at this correctly) onto a thinish backing. Looking at the size you could even rip down bog standard broom handles. One painted it'll look just like what you have.
