It's circular, it screws off, seems to have 4 notches at 12.3.6 and 9.

I tried with a set of adjustable but it slips Alot and I don't want to wreck them.

It's about 6cm across so my mole grips won't go around it.

Look up pin key spanners. Amazon do an adjustable one for £7.99 depending on the circumference??

As an alternative to the above suggestion get an old screwdriver and a hammer, gently tap the screwdriver in one of the slots to free it (this assumes you don't want to re-use the fitting)

The chamber I am trying to remove is filled with bearings so I don't want to bash it around

Always used a C spanner, doubt the one you link to is man enough as a mallet touch would be needed on a C spanner; but good ones can be expensive!

I'm reluctant to shock it as the cylinder is full of ball bearings and from what I can see they are already falling out (the reason I am dismantling this is because the rod that runs through the chamber does not run as smooth as it should).

Other than soaking in Plus gas you might have to use a slight tapping action, if you look on e-bay there is one C which is up for bidding 99p +delivery.

As said a “C” spanner is the correct tool , but expensive.

Undone lots of these types of retainers on bearings over the years , difficult to say how stuck or not it will be.

I would do the following :-

1) clean all around the nut , remove paint and dirt , fine wire brush
2) soak as said with plus gas or the like
3) if you have an old screwdriver with a square section shaft or a piece of bar , cut or grind the end to a slight angle so that it site in the slot neatly and sits on the side flat
4) whack it with a hammer decent shape whacks and am sure it will come loose.

I dare say you will get a new bearing easily from some where like Eriks or some other local bearing supplier.
