Before fitting the new two way switch, am I correct in thinking that D,E,F go onto the top row of connections on the new switch? All advice would be greatly appreciated.

A 2gang, 2way switch is two seperate switches, with one upside down to the other. It is not two rows upper & lower, it is two triangles.
The written schedule doesn't make sense.
It would be of more help if you posted a picture of the back of the switches (old and new), or wrote it out like this:
Old:
L1 L2 / COM
/
COM / L1 L2
New:
COM L2 / L1
/
L1 / L2 COM
Then you would see for yourself.
The slashes represent a diagonal line splitting the two triangles but the forum has ignored the spacing I put in.

That did used to be true, and in some switches it is true, but others it is not the case, so it depends on the switch as to its configuration.

Above is an MK switch, which is "two singles" side by side in the same orientation.

If you bothered to look at OP's schematic, you'd see he has the upside down type - no need to confuse the poor poster! Especially as probably Scottish.

Thanks for the feedback I now understand the triangle concept. I’m out at the moment grandchild’s birthday party and will go over all responses when I’m home.

I was merely pointing out that what you said is not always correct.

Mark the cables with a marker pen, and take photos before you disconnect anything
