Creating new door in bathroom

Post by Handyman112 »

Need some help hanging this door

I wanted to replace the old doors with one door as part of a bathroom refurbishment.

But seems like my builders cannot get the door hinges right and the door does not open fully

They actually have used the old doors and screwed on the mdf board. But as the outside wall is tiled it just doesn’t open

Sorry if I ain’t explained it right here some pics

Any help appreciated

I have to say this looks a bit of a bodge to me. The new panel should have been thought through properly and the ideal hinge would be like the type you see on kitchen cabinets where the arm throws the door clear. The panel is not thick enough to house the cups of the hinges and the door must be 18mm thick minimum. In this situation the new panel needs another board bonded to it to give the thickness and that old shelf front cut back to allow for the door to sit flush. You might need a new inner frame to mount the hinges on as well. It is easier to do than explain.

Im no expert but I'd say the issue is they have doubled the door thickness by just fixing a mdf board to existing doors, and the mdf is wider in width than the original doors that they have fixed the mdf to.

When you open the door the edge of the mdf is fouling the wall or does the edge not even get to the wall if the latter the mdf overboard is probably fouling on the existing hinges.
I don't think the original hinges will ever be able to be used to try rectifying this .
To get that "bodge" to work and look right will probably take more time and effort than it would take to hang a new single piece door.

Is it me or does the cut of the mdf also looks to be all over the place with un even gaps all around.

Others that know doors and hanging doors will be along, but if it were me I would not be accepting that workmanship. And everytime I looked at my newly refurbed bathroom it would just stick out like a sore thumb.

Amateur mistake, these butt hinges need the pin centre to be in-line with the outside surface, not inset! A deeper butt hinge might work if the opposite edge has a clearance on the old door, or as above a different hinge style.
Needs a carpenters touch.

look for a long throw /wide hinge/parliament hinge where the knuckle [hinge point ] is at the face
and use number no 7 screws not 8 or tens used there
