This is a good watch. I've never seen it before. Sharp as a tack.

72 is fairly good going for a sweaty, statistically.

He was a great actor. Funnily enough I remember him more for his less-mainstream roles, like the stuff he did for the Comic Strip Presents (5 go mad in Dorset, and Gino: Full Story and Pics), and Blackadder of course.

There's a definite link between poverty and life longevity. Interestingly since devolution in the late 90's not one area in Scotland is now in the top ten of the poorest areas in the UK. They're all in England.

So he died quite young. Saying that his years of alcohol and smoking certainly expedited this.

I think the average age for Scottish men is 76, compared to 79 for England, but the thing with all of those life expectancy stats is that they're the expectancy for males born now, rather than in the 1940s. These things have usually tended to creep upwards slowly, but I did read something saying they've gone down recently (here). Like you say though, poverty, smoking and drinking aren't going to help. Mind you, I'm not sure how trustworthy those stats tend to be -- I usually see them in papers, or on the telly, and the media tends to have a habit of picking out whatever studies/research they think will sell the most (usually doom and gloom stories...).

The most recent stats also include Covid deaths I'm sure. I rely on Scots Govt stats being more accurate that WM stats that have been well-known to fudge figures.

Nah - they don't include covid deaths because, like I said, that it the projected life expectancy for people being born now (well, 2018-2020), not 76 years ago. And that is Scotland's own figure that I quoted.
