I have an Automatic LandRover Discovery 2 diesel and make lots of short journeys.
I have a fairly new battery but experience tells me that darker days can knock the battery capability.
I do put it on a trickle charger overnight, infrequently.
As an emergency unit, what suggestions for a modern compact Jump Starter, please?

Which Jump Starter?
As I see it the problem with a "modern compact jump starter" is most of them are not as good as they claim, but that aside, at the end of the day they are still a battery and need to be charged up on a regular basis, that said I did have one for a very old van, I kept it in the back plugged in all the time, sure I got it from halfords, but TBH it usually has a 17Ah lead acid battery in it.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

I have a couple of the small Lithium ion ones. The one from Lidl, 'Ultimate Speed Portable Jump Starter with Power Bank' works as well as the much more expensive one I have. It's not currently in Lidl but they come up often where they're about £35-£40 or can be bought for about £55-£60 all the time on Amazon or Ebay. They also do one with a built in compressor which is about £25 dearer. I'd buy a separate compressor if you need one then if either the power bank or compressor fails in the future you can replace just the failed part.
I think it's rated up to 2.0L diesel but have successfully used it to start my Freelander 2.2 diesel with a flat battery. Charges from USB, so without needing to carry around a special charger if you already carry a phone charger. I recharge mine asap after use or about once every 3 months if not used.

I have a 12 Ah lead acid jump start unit, I use it in the main to power my tyre pump, I got a smart charger from Lidi, around £14, and if the Jag stop using the stop/start then I know the battery needs a top up, the others I just put them on charge around once every two months for a week.
Main point is a smart charger auto turns off when the battery is full, so safe with a VRLA or AGM battery, the old chargers are not.
