House temperatures

Post by Grendel »

Had some relatives over this christmas and they complained about feeling cold in our house. We have our thermostat set at 18 degrees and rarely have the heating on during the daytime as the insulation is decent and we have south facing windows.. They said they have their thermostat set to 22 degrees which seems quite high to us. What sort of temperatures do others have their houses at ?

Imho 22 degrees is way too high and will be wasting a huge amount of energy ….

I leave my heating on 24/7 at 22 degrees although I doubt the accuracy of the thermostat dial reading my setting is more through trial and error over the years. I have taken actual temperature measurements of around 21 in the sitting room and the bedrooms are roughly 20.5. Bare in mind that we are around home quite a bit so the heating pattern suits us as well as it supports my keeping the house fabric warm and just keeping the heat ticking over method. During the recent sub-zero temperatures, I left the thermo setting the same and the bedrooms dropped to 19.5 at one point. i appreciate this would not be the norm for most people me being a soft southern b*stard.

I feel the cold more than most so our thermostat in the lounge is set to 23 degrees...

That may seem excessive to some, but we have a huge heat loss in the room due to a conservatory off the room with single glazed double doors leading out to it.

The other room are cooler bedrooms and Kitchen about 18/19 degrees depending on weather.

Thermostat set to 13, don't put it on during the day, sit's naturally between 14-16. Evening after dinner the thermostat is turned up to 17 while we shower etc and goes back down at about 8.

At my mothers house where I spend a fair bit of time the heating goes on for 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening. Temp is usually around 10-14 there depending on how cold it is outside. During the recent cold snap it didn't get into double digits for a week. Bathroom is coldest room, around 7-11 again depending how cold it is outside.

we really have to be careful as we get older we can often have reduced ability to realize how hot or cold we are not talking diminished faculties just reduced sensitivity possibly to a dangerous level
now the biggest problem comes when you fall ill or become incapable off movement or communication
you can survive several days without food and water but if your core temperature gets too low your in trouble

Haha, no I am not, my mother isn't either.
You can live quite comfortably with temps like this with some forward planning. Electric blanket to keep you warm in bed, clothes warmed on the radiator in the morning for when you get dressed, good layers. The only time when I really feel the cold is when getting undressed to shower.

Back in the 50's when I was born there were few houses with any form of central heating and the heat was usually from one or two fires in the main rooms. You would hop up quickly to the loo as it would be cold when you left the hot room. I recall having an electric blanket which was great after having hot water bottles previously. When my parents moved in 1967 we had central heating and it was luxury, it was comfortable all over the house. Your description reminded me of the 50's R, I picture you all warming your hands on a light bulb  we will be going back to that with heat pumps. Thank f*ck I have lived through the best of times, there is nothing to look forward to.

Don't worry, we aren't scraping ice off the inside of the windows or anything silly like that.

Heat pumps would be a disaster for us though, we won't have a chance at keeping the house even barely warm.

does my head in when houses are too hot.

i went to the pub after playing football last night. still in my kit (south shields top, newcastle united shorts and socks     ) lass i know was in there and she was whinging about being soooooooo cold. The radiator right next to her was fliping dancing it was that hot.

the other week when it was frosty i was up on a scaffold changing facias etc. had a decent snickers winter jacket on and i was able to work fine without being too cold.

stat in my house is at 20 degrees right now. its a one of those google nest things.
