Last weekend I felled two holly trees, one male and one female, in our garden as they were undermining the garden path and garage. For now, I've left the male stump about 18 inches tall. The stump is about 14 inches across and Mrs d'A has it in mind that the stump could be used as a permanent seat for our granddaughter. Is this possible long term? If so, what would I need to do to the cut surface of of the stump so it doesn't weep or rot?

A nice idea from Mrs D'a but kids have different ideas about where they sit and what they do, it will be used once and forgotten. It would be best to kill the roots with stump killer and after a few months Chainsaw the stump as close to ground as you can get. I found it easier to make a number of parallel vertical cuts and break out the stump with wedges, I got it fairly close to the ground. We bought our grandchildren a tent for the garden they went in it once and did not bother after. I think the most successful things we got were a fabric tunnel and a paddling pool which both got used a lot. See https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/busa-play-tunnel-10192013/ folds flat.
