Roller/paint coverage question

Post by Meeeeeeefsk »

Hi everyone. I'm relatively new to painting and have been watching videos on youtube to find tips on technique and equipment. When I see them using a roller they get about three passes/roller widths of paint from one loap up, but I'm finding that I only get one pass/roller width of coversge before I start having to push too hard and I can hear and see the roller drying out. I'm painting Leyland water-based emulsion onto old emulsion, and using a Hamilton Perfection microfibre roller sleeve.

The paint I'm using seems quite viscous and dries very quickly, I think it may be quite old and having been sitting around for a few years. I stirred it very well before use.

Thanks in advance for any info or advice :-)

I think it will probably be the old paint you are using. Paint can change its characteristics as it ages and whilst you might get it on it can be patchy and leave lines, also an eggy smell can leech out in warm weather. I suggest you buy a decent trade paint, not the B&Q stuff, and see how differently that works for you.

I thought Leyland was decent trade paint? It is being supplied by the landlord whom I'm painting for, he has bought a couple of new 10 litre tubs so I will see if that's any better once the old stuff has all been used. The ToolStation website says it can be recoated after 2-4 hours, whereas the stuff I'm using could be recoated after 20 minutes so something is off. Having said that, it goes on alright and doesn't end up patchy or full of lines.

The next tub of paint is drying much more slowly, the house owner said he bought them both recently and at the same time, one must have been sitting on the shelf for much longer.
