Newbie - Need advise on painting a room

Hello, I am totally new to painting and wanted to try to paint my living room but I don't know where to start.
Could someone suggest me what I should do? Should I apply a coat of primer, sand the walls, etc. or can I start painting the walls straight away? the room is currently painted in yellow and I want to paint it in a cream color.

I also dont want to do it in a very lengthy process, so could you guys please guide me :)

P.S. Its a rented apartment, so I don't worry about the super long lasting coats etc. I have attached the images for you to have an idea what the texture of the current paint looks like.
